| Is it true that civilians can't buy current BDU's because of chemical treatments that make it invisable to night vision (UV or IR?). |

IIRC, all 'official' BDUs had/have the treatment that supposedly make them 'less visible' to IR, but washing them in Tide, etc. negates this due to the chemicals in the detergents. Not that it really matters, as TI doesn't care what your're clothing is treated with, as it's picking up your body heat. ETA: Back before I got out, we tested this 'IR theory' using brand-new & old BDUs, and other than the old ones seemed to 'glow' a bit more, you were still visible to the various night vision devices. |

If by "Current BDU's" you mean the new digital ACU's the issue is more with the small patches of "Glint Tape" on the upper arms. It's easy to get the ACU's from civilian companies, but the ones with the glint tape are a little bit harder to get ahold of. The Glint Tape is meant to glow (or 'glint') when hit with certain kinds of light. You can only see it with NV gear. The idea is to use it to ID friendlies to help avoid fratricide. -K |
