Some have found peanut butter used with a coffee filter to work.  Seriously.

I think it was ChrisLe who suggested using toothpaste to gently buff the scratch.  I've never tried anyhting other than a damp paper towel.  It was a very minor scratch and it worked.

Tooth paste can be very abrasive. I use plexiglas polish from Blue Coral.  Always polish from the center to the outside, never in a circle.  Wenol Blue works.  Some of the less abrasive auto polishes work too.  I have taken some hideous looking rental discs and polished them into working order, just to save a trip back to the store.

I have never tried it on CD's or DVD's, but I use Flitz polish on used car headlights to get rid of the "cataract" foggy oxidation of clear plastic and it makes the lens look new again.

Go with the Skip Doctor.  I've used it on some badly scratched dvds and it works great.  It saved me a bunch of money.  I wouldn't say the dvd looks fucked afterwards, I think Magurgle is referring to the lines that are left by the polisher... but that's normal.

Yeah, the lines it leaves would make you think it fucked your disk more than fixed it, but once you try it it is good to go, they have a motorized version but that is just overkill.

I have never used the PB trick on a DVD but I did use it on a PS2 game and it worked very well.

yes, you are right, but for the occasional disc repair the manual is just fine.

I have a 2 1/2 year old that has known how to run the DVD player since she was 18 months old.  She's gotten to the point where she treats them properly now, but there are several that have some freeze ups and skips from when she wasn't so careful.
