A gun shop down the way is selling a police trade-in Glock 22 for $325, with night sights.

I am interested in a 9mm Glock, like the 17.  Before I spoke to the gunshop employee, I had been told by a range officer that converting a Glock 22 to fire 9mm is as easy as a barrel and magazine swap.  He even demonstrated it for me and let me shoot both calibers.

However, the gun shop employee said that that is both unsafe and unreliable, i.e. don't expect to take any Glock 22, shove a 17 barrel in it and expect it to function flawlessly.

Who is right?  Should I purchase that Glock anyway (good/bad price above)?  How much should I expect to pay if I want to convert it safely to 9mm?

Buy the G22 and shoot .40S&W through it, the way that John Moses Browning Gaston Glock intended.

I am interested in 9mm mainly for volume pricing.

Hi-cap (30+ rds) mags are also more available in 9mm, no?

If you want 9mm, why not just buy a G17 or G19? They can be found for just as much as the G22 and you won't preoccupy yourself worrying about whether conversions are reliable or not. And yes, you can buy 33 round 9mm magazines.

i have never heard of making a .40 glock into a 9mm. you could probably do it by changing slides but at that rate it would cost more (total) than just buying a brand new 9mm glock. you can, however change back and forth between .40 and .357 sig with only a barrel change. either magazine will work fine and the slide is the same since the case head is the same. i read an article once that said you could use .40 or .357 sig (with appropriate barrels) in a 10mm glock without even changing the magazine but i'm not so sure it would feed well.

glock factory 33rd mags are plentiful and inexpensive in 9mm but to my knowledge there has never been a glock factory 30 rd +/- .40 magazine. the scherer mags suck so don't bother. i have a couple five round extensions for fifteen round .40 mags i bought from arrendondo and they work fine.

You can't throw a G17 barrel in it, it has to be a CONVERSION barrel, ie, a barrel with the G22 barrel external dimensions chambered in 9mm.

I don't have one but I understand they are reliable for the most part.

Won't the bolt face of the G22 still be 10mm wide?  I would think you'd have extraction issues trying to feed 9mm even with a 9mm barrel and chamber.  It'd be like trying to stick a Glock 20 barrel in a Glock 21 and shoot 10mm.  Bad idea. You'd need a complete new slide, which runs around $400.

Here are a few threads from GlockTalk about conversions from .40 to 9mm:

A conversion barrel works quite well for him.  Scroll a little past halfway down the page... he specifically addresses the extractor issue.
