Ok so we have several computers in our house. One of which is a really old, jury-rigged together POS that I ended up with. The tiny case is splayed open and is running on two internal hard drives, it's slow as hell and just plain sucks. But, it's the one with all of my documents and shit on it.

Well, I was about to read through some pdf files I had on there and I decided to listen to some music. So while I'm trying to plug in the headphones in the back of the case, all of a sudden the damn thing just switches off. To top it off, it won't turn back on.

So I start fidgeting with all the cords to make sure everything is in place and finally get it to turn back on. Except now nothing comes up on the monitor (which I can assure you is on, the light's on but it's blinking like it does before the computer boots) and the computer's power led is yellow instead of green. So I figure I might as well see what I did to make it turn off. The headphone plug goes into the USB port (right next to the headphone jack) and it happens again.

So I start fidgeting again and it comes back on, but this time the power led only flashes green. The hard drives don't even make the little whirr they usually do, which they did before. So now whenever I unplug the power cable (only way to turn it off since the power button isn't responsive) it will almost randomly start up in one of those two modes. Both of which are equally useless.

I don't suppose anyone has any ideas? There are some rather important things on the hard drives I'd much prefer not to lose. The only option that comes to my mind is trying to pry open one of these goddamn Dell tower cases and hook the hard drives up in there...but I seriously can't figure out how this thing comes apart.

if you have another computer, just take the hard drives out of the old one and buy an external hard drive case for them, then you can connect them to your newer computer.

That's the only answer that has a reasonable price tag attached to it.
