| Hey, I want to get my niece a USB guitar interface so she can start recording and composing her own musical compositions with her guitar and PC. Just looking for something entry level (not talking Protools or Cakewalk here....) I'm thinking around $50ish and would like it to be able to mix (i.e. record a rhythm and then record a lead over the rhythm and then add bass line, etc ) Anybody know of something fitting this bill? |

Not really anything like that for the $$ you're wanting. The cheapest one I know of is $99 or so. The Line6 LinePort is the cheapest I know of. There are ways of doing it cheaply, tho. Use a nice starter multi effects like the Digitech RP-50 or one of the cheaper Zoom brands, then record into your soundcard's "line in". All modern soundcards will play and record at the same time, so recording the "line in", you can use any multi-track program to record something, loop it, play it back and record overtop of it. If you are unethical and evil (like me), you could get the software for nothing. There are basic multi-track shareware progs tho, if you want to be honest. It won't be a modeler, but it'll work for basic composition. That's what I did when I started out years ago with a Digitech RP-1 and a soundblaster. |
| I've seen something like what I'm looking for at Best Buy but don't remember what brand it was. I DO remember it was about $50. I use a $300 soundcard and Cakewalk Pro, but my niece is just beginning so I don't wan't anything too complicated for her (otherwise I would just boot her a copy of my software and get her a better soundcard...). |

zzounds has the M-Audio Jamlab for $60 + shipping. http://www.zzounds.com/item--MDOJAMLAB (ehhh, , , -is the guitar electric or acoustic?...) -------- The problem with most free/included software is that it only demonstrates a hardware feature, and it isn't really very useful compared to what you can buy. I don't know anything in that price range. And (by far) the easiest way to do simple multitracking is with the little Zooms. The Zoom PS04 has a drum machine and a mic built-in. ~ |
This is exactly what I'm doing. You can find the RP-50 for around $50. It has a bunch of basic drum tracks built in. www.ntrack.com for the software. It would be unethical and illegal to find and download a crack for the demo version. |
Sure you can. Each track is an individual file and you don't merge them until you mixdown the file. |
