Does anyone know the name of the software that they use for programming motorola 2-way radios?  I can find the data cables but it doesnt appear that anyone sells the software the actually program them.

Thanks

The codeplug software (RSS) is not something you see around too often. What type of radios?

edit* I see they mention the RIB boxes in the link above, you'll need that also if it's an older Astro Saber etc.

Basically I'm not sure what I am going to go with yet.  I've been looking at radios on ebay and found some with data cables.  That all got me thinking about the software itself.

The RSS is out there, the problem is it is not always backward compatible, menaing if I programmed a couple Astros with astro rss version 9.0 and you bought 8.0 etc, you would not be able to read the radio codeplug or clone the radio. The software is where you create the entire codeplug that is going in the radio. Unless you have one to basically read from and clone the others. HTH

So you're saying its pretty much not worth the effort? :)  Do local shops usually program radios for a reasonable cost?

With respect to commercial radios (not amateur stuff)...this is why I buy Icom. Their programming software is available to mere mortals. Unless you need something uniquely Moto it's just not worth the money or the hassle. Moto is the most rugged, but if you can afford the occasional radio failure, go Icom or Kenwood.

OK, 1 more question.  If the auction does not say the operating frequency what is the best way to find out the frequency when you get it?

Visit CSI radio, they are on the corner of 24th and missile. Great people to deal with.

My current radio is a HT1550-XLS and I love it.

Wyolink is the new standard for all radios in the state. Do a search for WYOLINK to learn more.

Thanks, it looks like I'm going to pick up a couple HT750's and will need to have them programmed.  Looks like the radios can be programmed between 136-174Mhz.  To operate in the ham bands I know that I need my operators license which I do have. To operate outside of that what do I need?

The Only place you can legally obtain the MOTO RSS or Depot software is from MOTO and they will sell you a license and you may use the software but they don't "Sell" it they just license it... and for radios like the Saber you need an OLD 486 or slower computer..... Good luck! Really though you can get the software direct from MOTO.

If you want Carrier or Depot RSS...shoot me an IM, I'll point you in the right direction.

I can get my hands on all kinds of old computers.  Thats not an issue.

Do the newer radios still require an old computer?

The newer software is windows based, and is split up into groups of radios. Some will program more than one type.

I have seen sabers, astros, saber IIIs, spectra, spectrra plus all programmed fine with the latest computers. They did upgrade the software somewhat but you cannot do a high level drag and drop between certain models, ie the saber and spectra, just won't work, you will need to re-write the codeplug. Unless youhave tons of freqs it's not that hard.

OK, so I found a couple that I would like to pick up.  They are currently programmed to operate at 155.somethingMhz.  What do I need to operate in that frequency range?  Is that a business band or something like that?

Ok, I have access to most of the software, so I can program if you are willing to foot the UPS both ways.

That said, while the big /\/\ is very anal about thier software, but there are sources online to download. Some HACKERS in RUSSIA may have MOTOROLA software and you might find it with the right google search.

Not legal to use it in the US however.

154.4900 to 154.5400 MHz
Business Radio Service, 7.5 kHz spacing, odd channels at 154.5225 and 154.5400 MHz1

156.025 starts your Maratime Ship Statition allocations.

You should be between 144.000 and 148.000 if you want to operate in HAM 2m

155.xxx "may" be a public safety or gov't freq

154.570
154.600

Are now limited power (2 watts) MURS channels -- use with no license...

151.820
151.880
151.940

are the other 3 MURS frequencies... But are also limited to Narrow Band (IE: 12.5KHZ vs 25 KHZ)

see here for info..

I'll probably take you up on the programming.  Thanks for the offer.

When we got our copies of RSS for the department, I had to sign a ~30 page license agreement before they would even give me the pricing for it.  If you only have one radio, it is not worth the hassle.  For us, using the software will save us thousands of dollars reprogramming hundreds of radios.

I would highly recommend not getting the illegitimate copies found on the net.  I have read many horror stories of people getting caught with it.  Moto appears to prosecute without mercy.
