Minneapolis,MN police shoot and kill stabbing suspect

Authorities are investigating a fatal shooting by Minneapolis police officers that happened early Sunday morning.

Wayne Reyes, 42, was killed after being stopped by police on Hiawatha Avenue in Minneapolis just after midnight.

Police say they were called to a domestic stabbing a few blocks away. It happened at the home of Tommy Strom who says Reyes allegedly stabbed his girlfriend in the leg. Reyes also allegedly stabbed Strom. Neither injury was life-threatening. Strom says he called police. When officers arrived, Reyes had taken off in his truck.

When Reyes was stopped down the road, police say he got out of the truck with a gun and was shot several times. He died at the scene.

"When you're being ordered out at gunpoint from a vehicle and you come out with a shotgun, this is kind of the unfortunate result of that," says Deputy Police Chief Rob Allen.

The officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard police procedure.

They are Dante Dean, Brian Grahme, Shawn Kelly, Oscar Macias, Terry Nutter and Derek Chauvin.

The Minneapolis Police Homicide unit is investigating the shooting. Internal Affairs is also conducting a review of the incident. Both are standard procedure.

(WCCO) Minneapolis Jerry Reyes looked at the memorial bouquets lying among bullet holes where his brother Wayne Reyes died in a confrontation with police. He understood that his brother was accused of stabbing a woman during a domestic argument, but he was angered that officers fired several times.

"There was 30, 40 rounds probably, amongst six or seven officers," he said.

Minneapolis police shot and killed Reyes, an alleged domestic abuse suspect, after he exited his pick-up truck and confronted them with a sawed-off shotgun early Sunday.

"He came out of the car with what appears to be a shotgun, and officers were forced to shoot the suspect," said Deputy Chief of police Rob Allen.

According to police, the chase began when the 42-year-old man fled the 4500 block of Snelling Avenue South after allegedly stabbing a woman during a domestic argument. Police then chased him down to Hiawatha Avenue near East 42nd Street. It was shortly thereafter when he emerged holding the shotgun. Police shot the man dead after repeated orders to drop his gun were ignored.

This scenario seemed to make sense to Reyes' friend Tommy Strom, who said Reyes expressed the desire to commit suicide Saturday night. Strom thinks it was possible that Reyes tried to goad the police into shooting him by threatening the officers.

"He took it out on the street and the cops took care of his death wish," said Strom.

As is procedure, the officers involved -- Dante Dean, Brian Grahme, Shawn Kelly, Oscar Macias, Terry Nutter and Derek Chauvin -- have been placed on administrative leave pending an internal review.

The Medical Examiner's investigation into the assailant's death is underway.

The female assault victim is reportedly being treated at a local hospital and is expected to survive her injuries. She told a friend that her stab wounds are so severe, she fears she may lose her leg.

Minneapolis police were forced to open fire on an armed man.

The suspect is dead.

Tonight his friends say drugs may be to blame for the violent outburst.

Police pulled over the man on Hiawatha Avenue at East 42st Street. When he got out of the car he had a shotgun, police say.

Several officers fired shots. During the hail of gunfire shattered glass and holes in brick walls were left behind.

Tommy Strom, who identified his friend as "Wayne," says he died because he was high on drugs and out of his mind.

Officers shot the man to death while trying to catch him.

He called police after "Wayne" fired a shotgun at the ceiling of his Snelling Avenue home, Strom says.

He claims the attack escalated when "Wayne" stabbed him in the leg and stabbed his own girlfriend.

The violent outburst left blood spatter on Strom's sofa.

"He was going out to his pick-up to get more .410 sawed off bullets, get her, get me, and he said it was a suicidal pact," Strom says.

Police arrived within minutes and chased the armed man about five blocks.

They had no chance but to shoot, police say.

The couple was staying with him temporarily, Strom says.

Saturday night, the three of them were hanging out drinking and doing drugs when his friend "Wayne" became violent.

Police have not officially released the name of the 42-year-old man involved in this police shooting.

The investigation into how many officers fired shots continue, which is standard procedure.

The woman who was stabbed was sent to Hennepin County Medical Center, recovering from the wounds.

This is the third deadly police shooting for the Minneapolis Police Department this year.

In September, police shot Dominic Felder after police say he resisted arrest and grabbed an officer's gun.

In July, an officer shot and killed Fong Lee in North Minneapolis. The officer says Lee confronted him with a 9 mm handgun.

This story leaves me with questions....

Do we ban guns? Do we ban knives? Or should we ban crazy people? Definitely we should start by making it illegal to stab someone, but after we've done that we must do more to ensure our safety!

I'm going to dismiss this as the media continuing to describe every shotgun as sawed-off until proven otherwise.

Like I said, in the news, everything shotgun is a sawed-off. Even the ammo.
