My wife and I took my 7 year old to the doctor recently and asked the doctor if my son was tall for his age. The doctor thought he was tall and even charted his growth on their growth chart. He told me the charts were pretty accurate, as they are made after years and years of study. My son is 7 years old and stands 4'6" and weighs 73 lbs. He is tall and thin. Doctor said he is on pace to be 6'6". I am only 5'10" and my wife is 5'7". I guess he's always been tall for his age. He's always ranked 95% or greater with a few greater than 100% on his growth records. Anyone have their children's height charted when they were younger and was the prediction accurate?? |
The charts are bullshit. They told me I was going to be 6'3''... For years, all I heard was "you're going to be tall, like Grampa!" Now I'm in my 20s, 5'6'', and still waiting for that fking growth spurt. Don't get excited about the charts. - BG |

I think height has little to do with genetics. If you ever visit the Netherlands, one of the first things you'll notice is how F'ing tall everyone is. In fact, they're the tallest people in the world. But the strange thing is that many people who were born there that have immigrant parents, like say from the phillipines, are way taller than their parents. It must be something in the food. ETA: All of the western world has been getting taller with each generation, but we're falling behind Northern Europeans. |
I'm not quite sure what to think, because I've heard from some that the charts were right on with their children, and then I hear experiences like yours. All I know at this point is that at 7 years old, he is the same height I was when I was 13. My grandfather in Hawaii was only about 5'. My Dad is about 5'5". I'm 5'10. Seems that in my family, each generation is at least 5 inches taller than the last. |
I went to school with Verne "Mini-Me" Troyer. He never did get his "growth spurt".

As I recall, the growth chars were pretty accurate for me. The doc said I would probably be about 6'3", which is right where I am. My Dad is 5'11" and my Mom is 5'5". If height is genetic, it probably comes from my dad's side. He's kindof short for his family. Hell his uncle had 5 daughters, the shortest of which is 5'10". I would say family history plays a part, as well as other factors. Then there are people who are short or tall for no aparent reason. |
