Report it stolen. Yes.

You could still let the guy post the smith's name, so we know to stay away from a crook.  What is wrong with that?  I understand the address, etc...

Oh yeah, to add.  Report it, that is a theft of a firearm if you sent him a receiver.  Not to mention the guy must have an FFL to accept firearms to work on.

The way you deal with these situations is this.

First, make a last good faith attempt to contact him.
If you have an address, send him a registered letter he has to sign for.

If you get no response, contact your local ATF and talk to them.
Simply explain all the details and give them all the info you have, including the rifle's serial number.

THEY'LL get a response from him.  If you're an FFL holder you DO NOT pull this BS, and they'll get his attention.

This has happened before, and I've yet to hear of a case where the AFT didn't get the gun returned.
If the guy's sick, no harm no foul, and no one can blame you for asking for help.
If he's dead, sometimes the wife or whoever has NO idea about who owns what, or may even not understand the guns weren't his.

That may be the problem.....

Parma Heights, OH - A body found in Parma Heights has now been identified.

The victim - 48-year-old James Balogh.

He was found face down in a creek behind the Park Creek Retirement Community on Saturday.

Balogh had some minor cuts on his head - but there's no evidence of foul play.

The coroner is awaiting a toxicology report before determining an exact cause of death.

Holy SHIT!

I know Jim Balogh. I'm shocked, he was a good smith. Slow sometimes, but he did good work.

I know this is a serious matter and all, but I glanced at your avatar just as I was reading "Holy SHIT!" and Bullet's eyes were bugged out. I laughed.

Anyway, sorry.

That's ok, what I get for making a comically animated Labrador.

Balogh was a well-known FAL builder in the Ohio area, my friend who's an FFL had him do a ton of work and sold alot of his builds, they were always very good. I had an AK and a G1 he did, wish I had kept them now. I wish I knew more about this.

Man, that really sucks because I'm probably going to be moving east at some point, and I'd want to know who all the good smiths were. There's one less now.

As a latecomer, this thread is a little confusing, and that last post makes no sense at all.

OP and others thought the gunsmith was found dead, explaining why the guy will not return his phone calls and perhaps why his wife cant figure out whose gun is whose in the business.

Guess not.

Call the ATF, they might put him or his dog in a ditch.  Serious get your gun back dude.

I hate to be negative but you live in the PRK right? Why are yo having an AK made for you in Ohio when it cannot be brought back into the PRK without violating the state law?

Just asking.

All I know is that if it has a bolt, breaks open or it pumps to shoot I am good.

So please tell me more.
