Just starting to get into it - I'm using a Kits-R-Us Kit #149 programmer. This programmer kit has both USB and serial ports, which makes it usable with just about any PC.

The code is being written in PicBasic, using Crownhill Associates' free Proton Lite Development Suite demo software. The demo has no expiration date, but is limited to 4 specific Microchip PIC devices (including some very useful models), and a maximum of 50 lines of PicBasic (enough to get a surprising amount of processing done!). Eventually, I'll spring for the full version, which supports virtually every Microchip processor in the catalog.

So far, projects include a battery charger for automotive applications (makes good use of the 12F675's A/D converter feature), a NiCad trickle-charger, and a small home security system.

I built a NoPPP a while back and made a few projects including a spinning LED clock before they were all over the stores. None of the code or circuit design was my own but posted online by their owners. Gotta love PICs for covering the gamut from quick and simple fun circuits to mini computer systems...
