Just came back in from the balcony - it was beautiful.  There were a few low clouds between us here in Cocoa Beach and the Cape but they moved off-shore just in time.

I saw the last one in high def, and it was the first time I'd seen the main tank camera view (best camera, IMHO).  On the last one, you got to see the ass of the shuttle flying away as the main tank flipped towards the earth, but not this time.

Very cool, and FNC had the altitude and speed readouts which were amazing.

We can see the bright orange flame and white contrail quite clearly from northern Palm Beach county here even at roughly 100 miles south of Canaveral (when the cloud cover cooperates, as it did this a.m.) for about 25 - 30 seconds. Awesome sight. Was thinking about the peaceful use of technology for all of mankind's progress and benefit as opposed to how the ROP would and does use it.

You should get a car pass and go see one live and in person. I got to see the launch of STS-3 that way.

Oh Man!!!!  You were way closer than I was!  What kind of camera did you use to take those pictures.  I used a tripod mounted Pentex Program Plus SE with a 500mm F/8 mirror lens to take some shots and the Shuttle looks 1/3 the size of yours.

Yup.  I know because I was on the shuttle at lift-off.  I was an alternate in case one of the guys on the squad got sick on the ride to orbit.  Nobody did, so I parachuted out at 200,000 feet.  It took a while to get down, but I'm back home now, making jerky for tomorrow.

Oh, you BASTARD! WOW!

Closest I've been since STS-5, which I saw launch from Titusville:

My daughters watching the first launch since the loss of COLUMBIA. They are standing in the parking lot of SeaWorld in Orlando. WAY too cool.
