I can't get msn or yahoo messenger to work on my pc. I used to have it installed and it just quit working. So I attempted to reinstall both. It goes through the whole process and when I hit install it says "Not able to install no changes have been made to your computer" I also have an email button on my computer that would take me to msn sign in page. It will still take me there, but it won't sign me in anymore. It just says attempting 3 or 4 times and then unable to complete. Are the security settings or somethng messed up? Any help would be appreciated. |

We'll assume it's a windows box... Ever use skype? How old is the install of windows? Most of the time I find it easier to reinstall the whole thing in a couple hours and KNOW when I'm done everything is good and will work. A little note I just sent out which doesn't answer or help w/your specific problem but makes for a great foundataion once all is working... Yup for spyware... http://www.safer-networking.org/ http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ Popups (outside the browser) may be a different story. I use this but sometimes that won't even get it, gotta hack the registry to fix and is a major pain. Most of the time I simply reformat and reinstall after backing up bookmarks (favorites), data like quicken, search for .doc and .xls files that qualify as users data and the likes... http://www.clamwin.com/ Once clean, run the "teatimer" in clamwin so any registry changes will authorized by you beforehand via a dialog box (very nice feature!). From there I download firefox, go through all the settings especially the cookie stuff (ask me every time!). If I HAVE to use IE (on occasion), I go through ALL the settings there turning off automatically allowing scripting to run yada yada (more homework!). To further protect yourself turn off ALL unnecessary services in Windows. Here is a link or two, google "xp unnecessary services" for more... http://www.jasonn.com/turning_off_unnecessary_services_on_windows_xp http://www.sanx.org/tipShow.asp?index=65 Finally, make sure you're always behind a firewall. Start->run>cmd and type ipconfig. If you have a non-routable ip address like 192.168.X.X you're good, if not use windows firewall or Windows IPSec (which can be configured to filter or allow anything you need, not many people know about this tho. I have a file I can send that is a pretty straight forward configuration if interested and the way I do it). This stuff is a pain but once you setup you only have to worry about installing/installed programs and Bill gates crappy OS blowing your shit up and not the internet. To eliminate all these problems completely and the need to stroke the hell out of it before you start being productive, you could use this, it's absolutely free, TONS of support and you'll feel like Superman without a care in the virtual world ... http://www.mepis.org/ |
