I've always wanted to score one, but haven't gotten around to it. I'm seeing a lot of people talking them down lately. What's wrong with this rifle?

They're usually not very accurate. It's hard to find factory magazines that hold more than five rounds.

For me:  No cheap mags and accuracy isn't the greatest.

Be right back, I'm going to get popcorn...

I've heard things such as poor accuracy, cheap sights, expensive mags - just to name a few. These are things I've heard, I'm not speaking from experience here. I'm sure others will chime in shortly.

When they heat up, the groups start to wander quite a bit.

I had one, and found it far less picky than an AR when it comes to ammo, but other little things like the rear sight walking out when it heated up, combined with the inaccuracy, turned me off to it enough to trade it in.

Finding mags used to be a major issue during the ban, as pre-ban AR mags were so much more prolific, but it's not as big a deal anymore as factory LEO hicaps are available now.

Do Mini-30's suffer the same plight?

I've already got enough in the AK department for now. Looks like both the Mini-14 and Mini-30 can just stay on the racks.

Get a harmonic balance done and its a pretty good rifle.

Part of the accuracy has to do with barrel length and harmonics.

There was a guy on here that had the barrel on one chopped to 14.5 in and had a phantom flash hider permenantly attached. It improved the accuarcy of the gun.

My eight year old grandson loves it I set up water bottles at 25 yds, he loves it, just a shooter, lightweight, crappy trigger and sights but it shoots. Easy to take apart and clean.

Here is mine.

Honestly, I like this Mini, but if you are going to spend what I spent, you can have a bad ass AR and $400 or $500 extra.

I had a mini-14 about 9 or 10 years ago. It had a sidefolder, was reliable as hell, and not very accurate. no worse than my AK, but nowhere near as accurate as the crappiest 20"ARs I've had since(or before).I got six 20 rnd mags with the trade, so that wasn't an issue. I just never could hit with it like I could with my ARs so I traded it off for a M77 .243 with an inexpensive Simmons scope for the warden to deerhunt with. She likes it so I love it!!!

I like the Mini14/30's but if you get one, you just have to udnerstand and accept what you are buying.  But I would choose a M1 carbine over both actually.

Thanks for all the replies! I'll just stick to AKs and C&R stuff for now. I'll never look at Minis the same again.

Good decision. I traded in my Mini-30 soon after I got it. Lacked coolness and it wasn't even cheap to buy.

Could get three 10/22s for the cost of one Mini-14.

Good decision to skip the Mini-14.  It's a plinker that can be fun.  But if accuracy is your game, you're going to have to shorten the barrel or put a stabilizer on it to dampen it.  For all the $$$ you'll spend, you're better off with a short heavy barrel AR for which there will be plentiful magazines.

Even tho I had one and traded up for a AR15.

I still like to look at them, Have no desire to shoot one again tho.

Was it confirmed that Mr. Ruger supported the fucking AWB?  I refuse to contribute a single cent to his company if that's the case...
