Does anyone know of any pre-paid cell phones where the minutes DON'T expire?, and I don't just mean roll over eighther but just buy minutes one time, and not have to buy more again unless you need more....  I.E. Is there a pre-paid phone out there that I can buy say 1 hour of time on, toss it in the glove box, and forget about it?  I don't go around with a cell phone glued to my head chit chatting, I would just like to have a phone with me incase I need it, but other than that it would never be used, this is why I want a pre-paid phone instead of a plan, but if I have to keep buying minutes all the time it's not really any better than a plan....

Also are there any cell phones that take standard batteries, say double, or triple A's?....

Also Ideally I would like to turn off the GPS, I don't like the idea of going around esentually lo-jacked....

I'm not sure of any companies out there that offer the "Buy now never use till you need to" pre-paid service(They get you by all your unneeded reups. That is how they make their money)

As for not getting low jacked. Turn the phone completely off and pull the battery.

Yeah but drug dealers("The Wire") use the phone then toss it a week later then buy a new one.

I just check out Tmobile. If you buy a $100 reup card you get 1,000 minutes that don't expire for 1 year. I think that will be the only option.

Tacfone(The drug dealers choice) offers a $100 year activation card with only 250 "units"(not minutes). Tmobile may be the better option.

No....

1) The 'GPS' isn't actually in the phone, it's in the network... The phone sends an ID signal that the towers can use to provide GPS co-ordinates of the user, while the phone is in use.... It's 'GPS service', not an actual GPS in the phone (if there WAS an actual GPS in the phone, folks would be hacking old cell-phones into home-made GPS recievers)....

2) NO, you cannot get away with a phone w/o a payment plan (either contract or pre-paid, they all have a mandatory plan). Remember, those phones are $200-400 pieces of electronics in terms of actual value, they are sold at a loss and the profit comes from the service. So no company will let you go prepaid and not buy minutes every (X) number of months....

I dont know what they do, I was just giving the OP a hard time. Also would that be actual minutes. My friend for example has a Nokia Trac phone. He buys "units" but things like making a call take .25 unit , taking a call takes like .5 unit , Recieving a voicemail takes 2 Units, some calls are more units than others.

Wish I'd have heard of that.

Just went Trac phone and $129 bought me 400 minutes that don't expire for a year, plus any more I buy I get double what i paid for.

Oh, well. Works for me.

Tracfone is the bomb

Typical cell phone batteries though.

Minutes don't expire.

Also with Tracfone, if you know someone else who has a Tracfone. you can get an extra hundred units each if the other person is listed as a referer(sp).

I don't remember how it works exactly, but we did that with my kid's phones a year or two ago.

A 60 min. time card runs about $18-19. You have to buy a new card every three months.
$6-7 a month ain't too bad. In my area, the Tracfone is the only pre-paid that gets any service.

Thats what i use, it's not bad, a fone good enough for me, the only thing i don't like, is when i have to make a phone call, i have to listen to "You have X-hours and X minutes remaining" kinda annoying, but w/e, it's better than $40 a month.... speaking of which, i think i need another card...
