Hello All

I have been screwed by the Windows Genuine Advantage. I can plop down 150 bucks on a license for my copy of XP which was already licensed, that is running on a machine that is about 5 years old.

Or I can give the big FU to Microsoft and move to Linux.

So will a usable friendly copy of Linux run on the 5310US?

And what is a friendly copy of Linux to try?

Or should I BOHICA for Microsoft?

My copy of XP was given to me while in college by the IT guy for our department, he said there was a license program for technical students. Oh well.

Fedora Core 5
Ubuntu

Both are pretty damn good and have very good support for various laptops and other devices.

1) Download the vista beta, use it for nada
2) There's tools to work around Genuine Advantage. You didn't agree to it when you bought windows.
3) Re-install windows, only upgrade to SP-1, and turn off auto updates. Avoid GA alltogether.
4) You could try Ubuntu if you want to give Linux a go.
5) Buy an OEM version from newegg for 89

5310US is a desktop.

I have migrated to Open Office for most stuff, but is there an app like WINE for UBUNTU?

I may need to run some windows stuff.

I believe WINE is an easy download using APT or whatever the GUI front-end is called.

Ubuntu is pretty good for beginners and it borrows Debian's package management (good).  FC5 is also good.

When you become a master then you can go Gentoo.
