I found this to be case, not that it amounts to much (.05 per message with my provider), but one should be aware of the costs involved.

Phone to phone messaging is included in the company package. Computer to phone is not included.

If you're on verizon its just [email protected] where number is your full number including area code.

Cingular only charges for the messages sent, all received txt messaged are free.

Here are the links to their webpages.

Cingular

Cingular (former AT&T wireless)

If you can figure out the email address used by the carrier, you can use email to message the phone. Just be sure to limit the message to 160 characters total including the header (from to etc). The typical format for such an email address is [email protected] (example [email protected] is the format for Verizon).

ETA:
Oops, this info is only for sms (text only) messages. You'll need to look into mms messaging.

Wouldn't it be easier to transfer it by cable or bluetooth?

I did this with the wife's verizon...

Took a pic with her phone and emailed it to my home email address. $.25

Replied to that email and attached the mp3 'ringtone'. Her phone can use mp3s that are less than 30sec for a ringtone.

Saved mp3 file onto internal memory of phone, then set it as ringtone.

I am not sure if she will get charged for recieving the mp3 or not until the bill comes in.

Hope this helps.

The easiest way to do this is to send a text message from your phone to your email address. Then, you can reply to the message to send an email to your phone via text messaging.
