Respect for the *position* I understand. But "fear". Cops want us to "fear" them?

For this reason..... they dont always garner "respect".

eta: And I do, somewhat, fear cops. Probably because I realize the enormous power they have to screw around with my life if they feel like it. I don't let those feelings dictate my behavior or responses, however.

Every time I've been stopped I've been cordial, polite, but confident.

I think that "fear" refers more to the consequences of violating the law rather than the possibility of physical harm in this case. Like a fear of going to prison or even getting a speeding ticket.

The OP (on the other thread) really does sound like he is implying the fear of a beatdown if you do not cooperate with your masters......
