Where I go shooting, the target stands are sometimes less than usable.  I recently saw an article in gun rag about making a target stand out of PVC pipe, and made one for my self, with a few slight changes.

If you don't have a good stand, here's a cheap, yet excellent stand, that can easily be transported to the range, even in a car trunk.

First the parts:

As you can see, it consists of 7 pieces of 1 1/2 inch, schedule 40 PVC pipe.  Each piece is 16 inches long, and they can all be made from one 10 foot section of 1 1/2 inch, schedule 40 PVC pipe.

Also needed are:

2 - Tees

2 - 90 degree elbows

2 - Caps

Five pieces are glued together as in the example.  The 2 upright pieces are not glued, but just slipped-fitted into the Tees to hold the wooden stakes.

The wooden stakes are 4 foot long and are just inserted into the uprights.

Here it is, ready to go:

I then staple a standard silhouette to the stakes.

If you are going to practice silhouette shooting, you are ready to go.

If you want to do some precision shooting or test your firearm for groups, you can just add a target to the cardboard.

Unless you are a really bad shot, you shouldn't harm any of the target pieces, except for the cardboard silhouette.

It is easily disassembled and fits back in the car trunk for the ride home.

Shooting is always fun, but it's even more so if you have good equipment.

Can you do some testing to see how many shots it takes to destroy it.

Looks good, easy, and cheap.  Thanks.

Just fill the PVC base with sand or something to add some weight

I'm sure time and use will take care of that testing!

Well, how about filling the base with sand, cement, or even pieces of rebar?
You might need to put end-caps on the open ends to keep sand/rebar in place.

Any reason that you couldn't put sand in the base?  Also, if the wind really got going, I don't see why you couldn't put a nail in the top of each stick, then use twine and some tent stakes to support them.

ETA, dang, I was too slow

What about U shaped loops pinning the feet into the ground, something like croquet hoops?

...

Another great thread O_P - I was going to knock together something way more unwieldy out of 2x4s in a bit but this is just what the doctor ordered!

Looks like several guys have alreadt come up with some good ideas to make these work in high winds in places like WY.

I don't plan to use mine in any southeast Texas hurricanes.

But if I did, I'd just use something to weigh them down.

Yep.

I used to use something bigger and harder to get to fit into the trunk.

This one is light weight and easy to take apart enough to fit in the trunk.

Light gauge 2 by 2 angle makes a nice stand for the stiff type targets, the two up rights face each other like this
<       >  bullets can penetrate the stand making hole but the light weight material allows you to continue use unlike heavy angle that crushes shut so the target will not slide in and out easily.

Mine are similar, but PVC takes the place of the wooden stakes to form a complete frame. The top cross brace is not glued to the legs.

I remove one of the top braces and fill them with water about once a month.  Very little movement in the wind. No sand, bricks or anything else needed.

Thanks, OP.  I'll be throwing one of those together this weekend.  Lightweight and easily transportable.  If it's windy, just use a couple of sandbags, otherwise leave it's lightweight design as is.

I use a frame made out of PVC water pipe. I use two pieces of rebar driven in the ground to support it. I use garbage ties or duct tape to secure the cardboard to the frame.

I DO NOT glue the pipe together. T his way, if I shoot out a section of pipe..it is easy to replace.

I bet these can be found cheaper if you shop around.  PVC parts add up, unless you have a 'free' source.  I have tons of scrap metal, but have never made one of these.  If I take a target stand, it has a metal plate for a target.

I didn't do it!!!

I shoot at the Full-Auto Range at the local gun club.  It seems some of the guys can't compensate for the recoil and let their weapons climb into the shed roof.

It's really not funny, as some of these shots will undoubtably go over the dirt berm.

Nothing funny about that.

These target stands are almost exactly the same as the ones the range I go to "rent" out to shooters. Theirs are all PVC, and have a full rectangle base and full U shaped upright portion that holds the cardboard. They rent them for $4, if you don't damage it you get your money back, if you do, they charge you based on how much damage ($1,$2, etc.). Pretty good system they have.

My brother fired my M16 years ago in a perfect upward arc. He didn't let off the trigger until he was vertical and shooting straight up so I know how it happens.

That was the last time he shot it.

I guess you're talking about Tman's shooting rest.

It works great, just as designed.

But, I guess a midget could also use it as a stool.

You will also notice that if the shooter is standing up, the bullets will only clear the roof by about a foot.  It doesn't take must "rise" and you are in trouble.

Yes, but you must also take into account those of us who have really bad shots shooting with us.

I made some really nice PVC target stands like yours and they worked great! Until a buddy shanked a shot from a .44 magnum into it.

But I would like to know where you buy your cardboard shilouette targets...
