Any reason that you couldn't put sand in the base? Also, if the wind really got going, I don't see why you couldn't put a nail in the top of each stick, then use twine and some tent stakes to support them. ETA, dang, I was too slow |
What about U shaped loops pinning the feet into the ground, something like croquet hoops? ... Another great thread O_P - I was going to knock together something way more unwieldy out of 2x4s in a bit but this is just what the doctor ordered! |
Looks like several guys have alreadt come up with some good ideas to make these work in high winds in places like WY. I don't plan to use mine in any southeast Texas hurricanes. But if I did, I'd just use something to weigh them down. |
Yep. I used to use something bigger and harder to get to fit into the trunk. This one is light weight and easy to take apart enough to fit in the trunk. |

Hey! That's my target stand design. damn gun rag thieves! archive.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=1&f=5&t=352561 ETA: Of course the pics aren't working. Let me see if I can find them |
|
Mine are similar, but PVC takes the place of the wooden stakes to form a complete frame. The top cross brace is not glued to the legs. I remove one of the top braces and fill them with water about once a month. Very little movement in the wind. No sand, bricks or anything else needed. |
|
Yeah, but didn't the TMAN version cost a lot of bread? |
Only two loaves, one white, one wheat. |
I use a frame made out of PVC water pipe. I use two pieces of rebar driven in the ground to support it. I use garbage ties or duct tape to secure the cardboard to the frame. I DO NOT glue the pipe together. T his way, if I shoot out a section of pipe..it is easy to replace. |

Good effort. A better solution: ![]() LINKY I bet these can be found cheaper if you shop around. PVC parts add up, unless you have a 'free' source. I have tons of scrap metal, but have never made one of these. If I take a target stand, it has a metal plate for a target. |
A "better" solution? The handy stand you show costs $40 and the "Hostage Accessory Target" is another $20. That's $60, all together, plus shipping. My whole set-up costs less than $15. |
I didn't do it!!! ![]() I shoot at the Full-Auto Range at the local gun club. It seems some of the guys can't compensate for the recoil and let their weapons climb into the shed roof. It's really not funny, as some of these shots will undoubtably go over the dirt berm. Nothing funny about that. |
| These target stands are almost exactly the same as the ones the range I go to "rent" out to shooters. Theirs are all PVC, and have a full rectangle base and full U shaped upright portion that holds the cardboard. They rent them for $4, if you don't damage it you get your money back, if you do, they charge you based on how much damage ($1,$2, etc.). Pretty good system they have. |
My brother fired my M16 years ago in a perfect upward arc. He didn't let off the trigger until he was vertical and shooting straight up so I know how it happens. That was the last time he shot it.

"Roof O' Truth", LOL! is that some type of midget stool |
I guess you're talking about Tman's shooting rest. It works great, just as designed. But, I guess a midget could also use it as a stool. |
You will also notice that if the shooter is standing up, the bullets will only clear the roof by about a foot. It doesn't take must "rise" and you are in trouble. |
And doesn't really stand up to multiple low hits. |
Or fill the PVC with cement. |
Ha! As hard as his head is, they just bounce off. |
It is windy here. I wish I had video of the times I have watched and waited while someone wrestled with a PVC 'creation' downrange. Dillon is priced high, it wouldn't take much effort to beat the price. |
Yes, but you must also take into account those of us who have really bad shots shooting with us. I made some really nice PVC target stands like yours and they worked great! Until a buddy shanked a shot from a .44 magnum into it. But I would like to know where you buy your cardboard shilouette targets... |
