So, I got a new computer. I have two computers hooked to the same router. I have run the networking wizard on both computers. I cannot use either computer to access anything on the other. Is there a magic word or something that I have missed? I'm sure it's simple, I'm just kind of a dumb guy. Any help? Thanks! |
Cisco RT31P2 broadband router. |
Cool (and congrats on buying something kinda cool and off the beaten path). Before I continue, do you want to share your broadband internet connection with the rest of the computers, through the router? |
|
Have you shared resources (files and printers)? For printer, go to start, settings, printer, then right click on the printer then left click on properties. Go to the sharing tab and share the printer. To share files, go to my computer. Find the file you want to share. Right click on the file, left click security and sharing, share file. This is very basic but a start point. |
yes, I did do that. |
I've got time now (not later), and it's easier if I walk you though it. Making an all inclusive guide that covers all possibilites will take too long. ![]() I could point you to some websites, but what's the fun in that? You came here for help. |
Is there a cable running from the back of your cable/dsl modem into your computer (kinda like a fat phone cord)? |
Damn. Thanks for your willingness to help, Sub. I thought it might be a slam-bam deal rather than a process. I've got a buddy who can come help, but thanks again. I picked a bad time to ask, eh?
|
Yes. |
It might be a slam dunk, or it might be a process. I don't know how far you've gotten, so I figure the best way is to start from scratch and get you setup right the first time. |
Yeah. I wish the one computer wasn't burning recovery dvd's. |
OK, cool. Some of the stuff I'm going to have you do will affect the internet connectivity on one of your computers for a bit. Okay, moving on: 1. Which do you have - cable or DSL (I might need to know this later)? 1a. If it's DSL, that brand and model modem do you have? 2. On the computer that is NOT plugged into the cable/dsl modem - Connect the patch cord (the fat phone cord thing) from the back of the computer to any one of the 3 ports marked "Ethernet" on the router. With me so far? |
I'm with ya, but I can't mess with the other unit while it's making recovery discs, I picked a bad time. |
No big deal. If I have you do this on the PC that's connected to your cable/DSL modem (which is it?), you'll lose your internet connectivity for a bit - which makes doing this over the internet kinda tricky. ![]() How long do you figure until your recovery disks are done? |
I'd say 15 minutes. |
|
Well hell, I'll wait 20 minutes. Will your PC be usable by then (all I need is Windows installed and running - nothing else)? BTW - Do you have cable or DSL? If it's DSL, what's the make/model of your DSL modem? Oh, and are you running Windows XP, 2000, 98, 95...? |
The internet goes into the router from the internet, then two computers are hooked up to ethernet out lines. |
The internet...ok, hold on. I need to make sure I've got this: You have two computers. RIGHT NOW, both are plugged into one of the 3 jacks labled "Ethernet" on the router. The cable modem is plugged into the port labled "Internet" on the router. Is that right? |
Yes. |
Well, hell. You've already got a working network. Can both computers get on the internet just fine? If so, what else did you want to know how to do (share files, or something)? |
Yes, I want files off of one unit onto the other. How to do this? |
It's easy enough. The answer depends on whether or not you have XP Home or Professional. I'll have to admit, I almost never see Windows XP Home Edition, so forgive me if my directions differ ever so slightly from what you see. |
Figures. ![]() I think it's close enough, though. Okay: The idea here is to pick a folder you want to share with the other computer. "My Documents" is a good (and common) one, I suppose. Anyway, whatever folder you choose, do this: 1. Open "My Computer". 2. Click "Tools -> Folder Options" 3. Uncheck "Use Simple File Sharing". Let me know if that much works (I'm hoping that it'll be similar to XP Pro this way) |
Nope, not an option. |
Heh, no problem. Basically, you should be able to right click in the folder you want to share, select "sharing", give the share a name, and click OK. On the other computer, you should be able to click Start->Run, type '\\<sharedComputerName>' and see the folder you shared. It MAY ask you for a name and a password, and you will simply provide a valid name and password of a user on the shared computer. That's kind of it, in a nutshell. |
| Got to Explorer. Right click any folder you want to share. Choose "Properties". Click the "Sharing" tab. Click the box that says "Share this folder on the Network". Decide if you want to let others write and delete files from that folder. If yes, click "Allow network users to change my files". Click "OK. You are now GTG. |
