Man Tries to Attack Cop With Tomahawk
By Associated Press
Fri Aug 11, 7:36 PM

DEPOSIT, N.Y. - Police subdued a man with a Taser gun after he tried to attack an officer with a Tomahawk. Jeffrey Moore, 37, of Deposit, was immediately dropped to the ground before he could harm the officer when two jolts of electricity passed through his body.

"Somebody's life was saved because of the Taser and it was probably the defendant's," said Deposit Police Chief Timothy Roberts.

The incident began at 11:35 p.m. Thursday when Moore was pulled over for a routine traffic violation in Deposit _ 93 miles southwest of Albany, police said.

Moore got out of the car holding what looked like a hatchet, refused to drop it, and began swinging it as he approached the officer, officials said.

"The officer asked Moore what he was doing with the hatchet, and he replied that he was having a really bad day and someone else was about to," Roberts said.

Officials declined to release the name of the officer who used the Taser.

Moore was examined by medical personnel on the scene, but was not hospitalized.

He was being held in the Broome County Jail without bail late Friday.

He faces multiple charges, including attempted second-degree aggressive assault on a police officer, a felony. He was also charged with second-degree menacing and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, both misdemeanors.

Not sure I would have chosen to use the Taser if the guy was approaching me.

That officer took his life in his hands using a Taser in that situation - they don't always work.

I would have double tapped his ass, no question.

Attempted 'suicide by cop'.

Hope he gets better.

If he was in Texas he would have gotten what he wanted.

Not a very good way to start a life of crime

It depends on the situation. If the officer was alone, resorting to the taser is a bad idea in my estimation. But, as is more likely the case, if the officer had another officer or two on scene to provide lethal backup, deploying the taser is a good way to avoid using lethal force.

Typically tasers are only deployed if there is lethal backup on scene.

I'm glad he had the chance.  Instead of a messy cleanup and a cop with PTSD we have a dipshit behind bars and a good story supporting non-lethal self defense.

I'm wondering where he got the multi-million dollar missle and launcher from.

He showed considerably more restraint than I could/would have.

"Man Tries to Attack Cop With Tomahawk"

Hmmm, if I read that correctly, it appears that a man attacked a police officer that had a tomahawk.

Technically, it should have said "Man with tomahawk attacks police officer"

Public schooling at it's finest.

Not all cops have a taser as a force option.

Me? BANG! BANG!

That officer risked his own life by uisng the Taser.  He should have engaged him with his duty pistol, no question about it.

But, Tasers don't save lives, they KILL people!  Just ask Amnesty International.

I would have Tased this guy if I had someone with an AR15 or a shotgun standing ready to whack him if it didn't work.  If I didn't have cover, I'd definitely have gone USP45 over Taser.

TASER is an acronym, not a single word.  It stands for Thomas A. Swift's Electric Rifle.  Named for Tom Swift of the young boys' book series.

Ok, continue.
