i have to admit i really have it pretty good.

i support large computer system hardware and generally work from home. our team is considered High availability so we can respond at a moments notice. that usually translates into 2-3 service calls a week. the rest of the time is spent taking training or more or less bs'ing with clients or siitting at home waiting on something to break.

most work weeks are realistically 10-15 hrs of actual work with 30 hours of bs.

i love my job and they pay me well to be "available".

sure i have low points with straight 30+hr on site repairs but those a not the norm.

i have had some truly shit jobs in the past and feel lucky for what  i have now.

I'm paid commission as a Lincoln-Mercury and Isuzu service technician.  If I'm not working, I'm not making money.

Come to think of it, a lot of times when I am working, I'm not making money.

Literally 90% of my work day today was surfing the internet.

About half of that was reading posts on here.

The other 10% was eating lunch, using the restroom, and talking with a coworker about guns.

Our incoming workload has gone to about zero.

Other times we have to hire extra help to keep up, but right now we are dead.

I took half of the day off yesterday to go have lunch with my wife and mom.

union job

Yeah, unions are bullshit, but after what you just confessed, it sounds like you might as well be working a union job as well.

For me:
I'm an intern at a large corporation, and I work hard because they pay me far too much money and I feel guilty... which explains why some big corporations don't do too well.  I do all the bitch-work that the salary employees would be doing if they didn't have me to do it for them... so they get to do important stuff rather than simple stuff.  If the work they give me is exceptionally boring, I don't work as hard, and I often get side-tracked... but I haven't ever surfed ARFcom during work hours... or any recreational site for that matter.  Overall, I work at about 85-95% of capacity.

My job , outside sales, sounds about the same, although I do not BS more than 30 minutes with each client. I do however see about 4 to 5 peole a day.

Haven't taken the nap yet but I have gone to a movie and hung out at the library reading papers and magazines. Surfin the net goes without saying.

I work as a service hand in the oilfield.  This means I am on a job alot of the time but not necessarrily working.  I have been offshore for as many and 235 days out of a year.   I also caught a job last year that lasted 26 days, but out of those 26 days I only worked for 22 hours.  Not to bad by my math.  The only downside is I have no schedule when I am home or when I will be home.  I just live by the beeper, well cell phone.

I went to work one morning and wasn't in the mood for it so when my boss started giving me shit I said "THE NEXT TIME I HEAR 'WHAT DID YOU DO ALL DAY' I'M GONNA GASOLINE THE PLACE AND LOCK THE FUCKING DOORS" Since then I've pretty much cut my production in half, don't get any shit and life is almost tolorable

I can count on "working", as in executing a focused task about 3-4 hours in a 12 hour shift.
Some of those blocks of time someone is trying like hell to die or a family member is seeing how far I can be pushed before go homicidal. Mostly I can count on staffing each shift to be a pain.
But, I am there and ready for task that require my skilzzz.
Some days I run the whole shift. Start to finish. But not often.
I worked like a slave for many years and did anything asked of me to get my position.
I like my job.

before my "professional" tech/security job was outsourced to india, if i was proactive [which i was, i was pretty passionate about my job] and got all my work done and was on call, i had plently of free time to surf ARFcom and such. it was pretty sweet.

but now that i'm back in the trenches of a stereotypical call center i spend pretty much every gawdawful minute of my day being bitched at by unhappy people. not fun.

yeah *sighs* i'd like to think there's a special place in hell for outsourcers...

I worked much harder than most to reach this point where I work very little.  I come from a family history of entrepreneurs.  I own a technical support firm that is between 10 and 15 years old.

I have completed the transition from being the entire company and working for everyone, to having the entire company work for me.  I visit my office once or twice a week, for one or two hours each visit.  I can silently view the office activities via webcam.  I can locate my staff via GPS or contact them via Nextel, phone, or email.  I know where they are and what they are doing. I remotely connect to the office and review thier numbers and actions daily.  They contact me for command decisions when necessary.  If everything is running well, I stay the hell away.  I pay them very well, most of them drive company vehicles, and have excellent health insurance benefits.

It wasn't easy to make the total transition, and along the way I paid my dues.  If I had kept the pace I set years before I'd likely be dead by now.  I have a private investigator and yes I've busted my own staff members in the past.  I have successfully sued a former employee, and a client.  Fuck with me and I'm your worst nightmare.  Help me and I'll help you obtain whatever you desire.  I believe the present staff respects me, and they understand how I deal with assholes.

I often feel guilty that I'm not at work.  Like when I was home sick from grade school and knew I was missing something important that would be on the test.  It is just a personality type, or actually a disorder I guess.

I could keep working and perhaps become fabulously wealthy, however I feel enough is enough.  It is time for me to enjoy.  I've taken care of others long enough, and I did a damned good job at it.

I am spending more quality time with my wife and children.  I also assist my wife with her aging parents who now live next door.  I think my priorities are in order.

So yes, I don't do much.  However my responsibilities are endless.

I am glad I didn't have this job when I was young.  Never would have been able to do all the normal activities with the kids.  Becasue I am on the road a lot, I have been able to score some nice milsurps over the past few years.  You get to know where all to good gun shops are.

heres my dream job....

i show up every morning at 6:30am for an hour of running uphill for 4-6 miles.

then i go spend the rest of the morning in a blistering hot motor pool sitting on top of 60 tons of hot steel.

then after lunch i usually go to a classroom, then spend the rest of the day mowing lawns, raking leaves, and mopping floors in boots and a beret. end up going home usually around 4 or 5pm.

pay sucks, hours suck, and endless vehicle and room inspections.

its hard to figure out how i like this so much better than my last job which entailed:
coming in to work at 4pm
making three times more money
talking to drunk girls all night
watching tv, eating nachos, and dropping shots of liquor on a regular basis.

I am one of the 10 or so 'go to' guys in this company of 120 or so electricians.

I don't/won't kiss any ass, so I'll never be in a supervisory position.  Although many of them come to me for help.

Some of the 80+ hour weeks were starting to wear thin this summer, but this work keeps me going - I'll be 50 in a few months, and I still play baseball.  I'm the only catcher in my age bracket (48+) that can catch an entire game (9 innings).  And the only catcher that can throw runners out at second from his knees.  I am a bad ass.

You won't find me flying a desk.

And for now, I wouldn't have it any other way.

I work in the conveyor/ material handling manufacturing industry. From October until April or May I work 6 days a week slinging steel. Today I stood around for 6 of the 8 hours and did nothing. I work in layout so if I read a blueprint wrong I can cost the company thousands for a couple of mistakes. Where I mark the holes is where they get drilled, tapped or slotted. I'm also assistant supervisor in our department and when we are busy it is an extremely demanding position. Days like today just suck though. Boring.

one time i was an intern at a large polymer/plastics manufacturer--i won't tell you who, but they make teflon and kevlar--among other things.  a typical day would consist of getting in at 8, sweeping the dock for 15 minutes and then playing dominoes for 3 hours.  next, we'd unload a couple of trucks for an hour or so and then take lunch.  lunch usually lasted about 2 hours and consisted of eating a sammich for 10 minutes and sleeping for the rest.  then we'd load trucks--which included weighing materials.  a big highlight was to take a palate of propane tanks down to the river for filling--as a college kid, we werent allowed to actually fill them so i'd take off my shirt and cop some rays.  by this time we'd go back for the afternoon break.  another half hour on the floor as a high profile worker and it was yabba dabba doo time.

frankly, i was bored out of my ass and the experience made me work just that much harder in school.
