| I have tried everything to keep the weeds from coming out inbetween the patio blocks and the small stone I use instead of mulch along the house. I have tried Ortho's new Season Long -which should actually be called Week Long because that's all it last for, Bayer Weed Control, and the other major brand who's name escapes my tongue right now...and they are all useless. They work for a few weeks and then the weeds come back. Anyone have any tips or care to share what works for you? |

Roundup kills the live weeds. so you spray that and kill everything in between teh stones. Then you need to apply a pre-emergent it's usually granular and you just sprinkle it over the rocks/mulch/whatever and it really keeps stuff from coming up lasts about a year. Should be about $10 for a big bottle that would do 500 to 1000 square feet. ask at your local garden center DO NOT use a soil sterilizer. You will kill everything, trees, bushes, everything. |
| I've used roundup too. It works about as well as the others -which isn't that great. These are just plain old weeds as far as I can tell. Every weekend it seems we are pulling weeds. Just sick of it really. I even went out and brought a 2gal sprayer and the concentrate...soaked the whole dame area and 2 weeks later weeds are making a come back!!! |
Not to hi-jack, but will this soil sterilizer kill everything if I put it in my drainage ditch? I can't keep the grass & weeds clear out of there & it reduces rain run off to a stand still. David |
I don't buy it. Almost every house in our 'hood has St. Augustine and many homes (including our own) struggles with weeds. Dollarweed isn't impeded one bit by St. A. Neither is crabgrass or the numerous other varieties that are predominant in our area. Now if you can keep things strong and avoid dead spots from chinch bugs and the like your pain will be somewhat minimized, but once the weeds get a stronghold it's hard as hell to stop it. My previous neighbor didn't do jack to their lawn and now my side yard is nothing but weeds. Half the side was completely obliterated by weeds and the St. A. was choked out, not the other way around. Now the new owners and I are re-sodding together. |
2-4-D rocks! It's the best imho. fwiw the Weed-B-Gone I use has 2-4-D. I get much better results with it than I ever got with the weak assed shit "TruGreen" ever put down. |
Best advice. |

Just get a goat and get it over with. As a side benefit, you can butcher it once your grass is short and/or drink it's milk, provided it's not a billy. :P ETA: I don't understand how so many people have fixations with weeds. Just cut 'em like you would the rest of the lawn, FFS. You're not running a golf course... |
Not sure how you could think a nice paver patio would look good with weeds growing out along every crack and crevice. Really looks like shit and kinda defeats the purpose of the thousands spent on the patio in the first place. Now if you mean weeds in the lawn, well that was not my original question, but in my case normally I don't care that much, but I have recently moved into a upscale neighborhood and EVERYONE keeps their grass manicured. Honestly I feel it is my duty to keep my home looking as good as thiers (not out of competition but just courtesy)or I had no business moving into a neighborhood like that to begin with. |
