I just got back from a two week trip to Quebec with my wife. It was the 2nd time we have been there. I will be posting some pics and comments in later posts. It is a fun place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there. We went to Montreal and then to Quebec City and back to Montreal. We spent one day in Mont Tremblant. A couple of observations. 1. Montreal is different than the rest of Quebec. More on that later. 2. When Quebec talks about there culture they mostly mean the French language. It used to be the Catholic religion and language but they turned there back on the religion in the 60's. Some are RABID about their language. 3. The culture really is about half French and half Anglo. This is surprising because the French only had influence up till 1759 when the English kicked their asses and took Canada. However because of the threat of the US they let the French keep their religion and language. 4. The architecture is gorgeous. The food is yummy away from the tourist traps, but the service sucks. They charge for EVERYTHING, even ketchup sometimes. The people aren't so much rude as just not polite. It makes you appreicate the US when you come back. 5. Taxes, taxes taxes. Somebody has to pay for their "free" health care. 6. Canada does not necessarily mean cold or cool. 28 to 32 degress mean sweating your ass off when walking around. 7. A bilingual country is very ineffiecent. Canada should force them to use English or let them split. Look for my next post. |
Yep, I lived there for quite a few years. Agree with all the above. The only thing I really miss is O'Keefe beer and having three ski resorts with 45 minutes drive. I still have my "Je Me Souviens" license plate. I was there in the 70's when they were bombing and kidnapping people. I remember when they killed Pierre Laporte. the guy the bridge is named after. |
The seperatists were pretty violent for a while. I loved the reaction I got from a soldier when I asked him. Vous etes un seperatist? |
