Has anyone ever used one of these. Not necessarily this brand or exact one, but something similar? If so do they work. I just ordered one. Impulse buy, Thought it looked cool, and I havn't bought a new toy for my computer in a while so this just fit the bill.

Overview

Keep tab on your world with the WVC200 Wireless-G PTZ (Pan/Tilt/Zoom) Internet Video Camera from Linksys®. It produces high-quality video stream with a maximum resolutions of 640x480 pixels and a high frame rate, utilizing MPEG-4 video compression. Using its built-in Web server, this camera can directly connect to the network either over Wireless-G (802.11g) to deliver live video and audio through the Internet to a Web browser anywhere in the world. The Pan/Tilt and digital zoom function allows you to remotely control the camera movement and focus, giving you optimum flexibility. With support for 64/128-bit WEP and WPA encryption, this Internet camera secures your wireless communications and virtually eliminates eavesdropping. The incorporated Security Mode tells the camera to send a message with a short video attached to up to three email addresses whenever it detects motion in its field of view. You can then log on to the live video stream if the situation warrants. Featuring a stylish wireless design, the Wireless-G PTZ Internet Video Camera includes software for monitoring and recording up to 9 cameras simultaneously.

Tag for more info.  I have been thinking of how best to secure my new compound I'm building.  Wireless web cams were on my list of things to research.  I also have been looking into a 4 or 8 camera DVR system.

I think it would be very open of you to share the camera's view of the room with your neighborhood.

Sarcasm, or are you being serious, because don't these things have some kind of encryption so you can secure them? Yeah yeah I know Haxors? surely they can be secured fairly well.

The vast majority of wireless cameras I have seen are wide open.  Encryption of the frames on a (relatively) cheap wire camera is difficult because you would need a processor in the camera capable of encrypting 15-30 frames PER SECOND in real time.  Most manufacturers aren't going to screw with that or the performance (lag) that can come with it.  The weakness of WEP is the more data is sent the faster it is to break with software free on the internet.

If you want privacy make sure you know what you are buying.

My sister-in-law would like to be able to keep tabs on her horse while she's out of town, so tag.

This isn't as big of a deal as one might think. General use CPUs suck at things like video and audio compression because they have to fetch instructions as well as data and then perform the operations to that data and provide an output. There are specialized chips called "codec" chips that perform these functions while being inexpensive. Quite simply, the chip is special purpose and only performs the function of compression or decompression. The silicone in the chip is built around the compression algo and as the data comes in it is compressed and an output is provided. These chips can run at clock speeds and power consumptions much lower than conventional general use CPUs.

You find codec chips in things like MP3 players, digital cameras (for jpeg compression and video), VOIP phones, etc. Anything that has a specialized function where a general use CPU just won't do.

I'd be afraid that it would kill me in my sleep.

It looks uber robo-tactical.

That looks pretty sweet.  How much did it set you back?

How much?  It's interesting, and I have no use for something like that right now... but still... how much?

One of my summer jobs was to design an implement a 20+ camera wireless IP-based digital surviellance system.

It was certainly a learning experience, to put it lightly.
