I watching FOX and they have this guy in Israel reporting on a rocket strike. This moron runs to the impact point of the rocket within a couple minutes of the strike, before the rescue units get there.

I think this one can be safely filed under the "No kidding" tab...

We'll hear about the idiots being killed during the bombing.  The media will think it's unfortunate, tradgic death.

Survival-wise, yes, they're idiots. Job-wise, that's smart. Journalism is all about getting the best shot, the best interview, being on the scene first.

I took Journalism 1 to fill out my schedule in my senior year of HS; the class was mostly full of 14-year-old freshman. Now, imagine the teacher (actually pretty conservative, and she also swore like a sailor and didn't mind if you did too) telling that class, at least once a month, that the average journalist's mantra is "if it bleeds, it leads." That's in level 1 of HS journalism, and it gets even more so in pro.

Being first on the scene is a tremendous advantage, especially with live TV. You have exclusive coverage of breaking news, which gets people to tune in early, and they're unlikely to tune out as long as the info keeps coming. And you get to the info before everybody else, so when you're out of info, they're out of info. Your network profits. You profit.

That's journalism.
