I need some wireless internet help. Roadrunner says its not their equipment therefore not their problem.

I have a NetGear wireless router that I set up my laptop on. We have moved and it is impossible to get the cable modem hardwired to the computer. Genius that I think I am, I went and got a Linksys USB network adaptor to hook up the desktop to the network.

I install the software, the computer tells me that it is connected but is unable to find the internet. When I called Linksys the guy in India he said that the WPA encryption that I am currently using with the NetGear router can't work with my desktop since service pack 2 has not been installed. He was most unhelpful. And after my experience with the geek squad guys my faith is limited in their help.

I need a quick step by step if someone has one of what I should do. Please.

I am running XP, a WPA tkip encryption, and the desktop is connected to the network but is unable to find the internet.

I would appreciate any help you guys could give.

Clear as Mud,

First things first. Turn off all the encryption and see if it works.

Secondly make sure that the new piece isnt defaulting to 192.168.1.1 which would be in use by the Net Gear.

Third Linksys is always a retarded setup, D Link is the fastest, easiest setup.

If your modem is DHCP capable, then disable DHCP on the Net Gear. Lets the modem assign IP addresses to computers logging on.

also check the IE internet options and under connections / LAN connections/ choose automatically detect.

If all that fails read the instructions and use the CD that came with it.

OK for the computer retarded how do I change the setting on the Net Gear? I had it set up thru the desktop originally but now it is hooked directly to the cable modem. I tried to change it to open but then it failed to connect at all.

Also the guys from Time Warner said that there is no set IP address, it is a different address each time you connect.

What is DHCP.

What I know about computers could be written in a matchbook with crayons, so please be gentle.

Ok, if you hook the netgear straight to your pc via cat 5 cable, then type in your browser 192.168.1.1, you should be able to access the router settings screen
if it prompts for a user/password then use admin / admin. Those should be default settings.  Same deal for accessing the modem usually. but the problem occurs when they are both hooked together. only one is going to be able to use that address.

So I would attempt it with each hooked alone directly to the PC and see if the are both using the address. If you find that you can access both that way then they are both set to the same address and you will likely need to change the default setting of the Netgear.  Change its IP address to something easy and not too far off like 192.168.1.200 etc. and after that you access it again after changing these settings by typing 192.168.1.200 , I always put bookmarks in IE to the router/modem/etc.

That change alone may solve your problem. What happened could be that if you moved and they were unplugged a while they all went back to the default which is always 192.168.1.1 meaning one will work and the other will puke out.

If thats changed or correct then DHCP is what autmatically assigns the ip address to a PC when it logs on. Instead of saying this PC is always 192.168.1.3. The router or modem will assign it a number.

My setup is that the modem will do the DHCP, so i disable that capability in the router, and make sure that the network adapter settings on the client computers is set to:

Under network connections on each PC choose RT click on LAN Connection/ properties/ the bottom should be TCP/IP click properties on it and make them say auto.

Try that. If your still unable to resolve it after checking it and rebooting, etc.

I would reccomend starting with uninstalling all the equipment, reinstalling the modem first, then reboot, the netgear then reboot, then the usb adapter. Turn of all the WPA security crap until you know it works.

The modem and router will also have a Reset button on them you might try, but only if you have the proper documentation to set them back up properly through the interface.

a better place for help would be the DSL REPORTS Forums or TESTMY.Net Forums

Am I reading you correctly when you said you can't connect to the internet when you hook a PC directly to the cable modem?

If so, you have bigger problems than the wireless router?  Until you can connect directly, everything else is futile.

Please advise and then I'll help you further.

Thanks Chris, I will try that when I get home.

Coyote,

My problem is the usb wireless receiver that I am plugging into my desktop. The NEtGear wireless router is plugged into the cable modem directly. This allows me to use my laptop with it's built in wireless antennae.

In the past I have had the desktop wired directly to the cable modem and the wireless router attached to the desktop. Due to a new house that won't work without major wall work which I don't want to do right now I can't plug the cable modem into the desktop.

I bought the wireless adapter for the desktop because I already had the wireless router set up with it directly attached to the cable modem.

The linksys guy said that WPA security would not work with my computer since service pack 2 is not installed and that I would have to use WEP but since I don't have access to the router I can't do it.
