Has the IDF given up on them? Any pic I see of an IDF soldier he has an M-16 or some variation.

Info from here

At the end of the seventies the IDF was supplied with the M16 family as from 1991 this rifle became the standard rifle. The Galil is still in use, but mostly in the Artillery corps and within units for air defence and security forces.

They are still in limited use.  I would like to have one.

The IDF may not be using them much anymore but IIRC a few months back there was a topic about the Estonian army in Iraq and they were equiped with Galils.

They're ok.

Heavy rifle that isn't quite as accurate as a FAL and isn't quite as reliable as a AKM.

But hey it's got a pop bottle opener so it isn't all bad.

The SIG 550 is the true success story of an accurized, reliable AK action. Of course SIGARMS was able to look at the Galil and improve upon it.

Not true in the 5.56 versions I have owned or shot.

What kinda reliability problems? AK family, no? Fruit did fall far from the tree?

I wouldn't call it a reliability "problem." It just isn't as reliable as a AKM. They tried to have the best of both worlds between the FAL and AKM and generally ended up with a heavy AK that wasn't as accurate as a FAL and not as reliable as a AKM.

And for those who own them be careful. The firing pins are NOT spring loaded. I was there for a rather significant .308 KABOOM. A splinter of brass wedged itself next to the firing pin in the bolt face and the next round slam fired out of battery.

Blew the gun apart and it was rather loud.
