I'm trying to put a video of what is described at www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=1&f=5&t=476672&page=1 on the internet and post it here, but I can't figure out how to put it on the computer.  I have a camera, I have a plug that is round and has a few pegs which I think is the video jack and which can plug into my video card and the camera, and I have Windows Movie Maker.  Isn't that all I need?  My computer doesn't recognize the camera.

I used to use the Dazzle program, but I used my old computer, and apparently it doesn't work with my new computer which uses XP.  When I try to install it it says that the program doesn't work with NT (which I don't have, but perhaps any Windows OP that it doesn't recognize it calls "NT."

What video card and what kind of camera?

You might wanna google new software that interacts with your camera.  Does it have a USB/Firewire port to plug into? That is how XP Will recognize it.

I have a EVGA GeForce 6800XT and a Sony 8mm camera.

There is only one cord that is able to plug from the camera to the computer, but that doesn't work.  the plugs are round and have four metal pins and a plastic pin, and the jack for it is on the video card.

I used to use a card that has a jack that looks like a very wide monitor jack to put videos onto the computer, but my computer can't find the software for it, and I thought that you could just plug the camera into the video card anyway.

I have USB ports, but I don't have a way to connect it to my camera.

sounds like you have an s-video plug.  plug diagrams

Maybe someone makes some sort of adapter that you could use?

eta: Check this out.  Might just be what you're looking for.

Yeah, s-video, that's it.

I can connect it from my video card to my camera, but my computer doesn't recognize it.  I don't know if I need some kind of special program, some kind of special hardware, or what.

Try Sony "Image Mixer" for software.

First, try to find the "Control Panel" software for your video card to see if it will let you switch inputs/record.  Some of the vidcap cards have that built into the driver, so you can do a direct dump, but no editing.

Otherwise, you will need some sort of video editing software that will recognize your card.   S-Video is not a digital medium, it is only a signal going to your vid card.  XP won't recognize something has been plugged into your card, you need software looking at your card to "listen" to the S-Vid.

Newer digital vidcams have the direct Firewire/USB2 link, as the video is stored digitally, it can be transmitted digitally, so when you plug into a Firewire/USB2 port, XP will "recognize" the hardware, since the camera can negotiate the ID and type of device it is once it is plugged in.   S-Video does not have that capability.
