TORONTO - Police began kicking down doors before dawn on a chilly May morning while gang members in Toronto's Jamestown neighborhood still slept. By lunchtime, officers had made 106 arrests, collected 33 guns and announced they had broken an international gun ring run by the notorious Jamestown Crew.

The raid was a shot across the bow from newly elected Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who says his Conservative Party government is going to spend money on crime control, not gun control.

The sweep came two days after Harper announced plans to dismantle Canada's controversial gun registry — a system hated by conservatives and gun owners, but lauded by others for reducing killings and helping police.

Canada's low crime rate and unique gun-control system has played into Canada's identity as a peaceful, progressive place, in contrast to its neighbor to the south.

There is no right to bear arms in the constitution, so the policy debate is much less heated than in the U.S.

Well its a step in the right direction, yes?

The new conservative govnmt has put forward a bill to scrap the long-gun registry (shotgun & hunting rifles). This will be put for a vote by parliement in a few months. Unfortunetaly, the conservatives have a minority gov. and most of the opposition is against the idea.
The opposition are going against the general opinion of canadians, because most of the onlines polls have given a "go" to scrap the registry, which is sucking up more the 75 million $ per year... just to have hunters & recreational shooters on police files (like they are potential criminals). Everybody knows here that more than 90% of guns used in crimes are not registered and criminals with firearm licenses are very rare...

Another big downer in Canada is that AR15 rifles (regardless of barrel length) are in the "restricted class" like handguns and they will remain registered by national police, even if this new legislation passes. We can only go shooting with restricted guns at gov.-approved shooting ranges and semi-auto centerfire rifles are limited at 5 round capacity ...

ARs were restrcted by previous gov't. Because this gov is a minority, keeping some of the previoud restrictions is the only way the other parties would even consider voting this bill.
