Out of curiosity, why do you think you need one?

Most scanners have pretty sensitive front ends, right out of the box - Adding an additional 10+ dB of amplification ahead of them just introduces cross-talk from strong, off-frequency stations. At best, they are a band-aid solution to weak signal reception.

Usually, you get much better results from improving your antenna instead (moving it to a higher location, using a higher-gain model, using a directional model, etc.)

Our Department is switching over to all digital radio traffic in a month.  Current technology scanners are about to be obsolete here.  Maybe I can get the news media to quit jumping my calls.

I'd be worried if my local dept wanted to hide from the media.  What type of system are you getting?  If it's APCO25, then there are only half a dozen scanners that can pick it up anyway.

If its not APCO 25 and they are just going digital at this date whoever purchased that system would be an idiot.

Oh, and the media will have the new scanners ready and are probably already listening to the test traffic.

+1 for improving the antenna

I agree, but look at Penn and FL with their ProVoice systems.  No scanner can decode that, and that would make me think why they feel the need for it.  Once again, i question LEs "needs" to hide what they are doing.  It's just too creepy.
