The wife asked me to get her some for when she walks in the park with the kids. I did some searching and found a bunch but there was so much obvious marketing crap and statistics that all seemed to go against each other. Anyone know what I really need? Thanks! |

Fox is rated at 2%, I believe. There was one site stating 2% was crap and that there's was 10%, then I saw 15%... Ahhhhhhhhhh! I thought I had always read that Fox was well regarded. Their keychain unit though, seem to be a tight stream. Looks like you have to go to their 2oz unit to get a fog. True? It would seem the fog was better due to not having to be as accurate under stress. Thanks! |
Hmmmm.......I do not claim to be an expert, but IMHO I would use the stream. |

I've always been told that SHU rating is how powerful the spray is and the % of spray just relates to how long the effects last. Can any real experts explain this? Also anyone have real world experience with the Sabre Defense line? My brother who is an LEO was just issued it to replace his Fox. He was sprayed with the Fox in training and doesn't know much about the Sabre. I couldn't find much on info on it other than it has a shu rating of 2 million compared to the Fox which has a 5.3 millin. |
It's Scoville Heat Units. I've been sprayed with the 500,000 and the 2,000,000. They both burn like hell. I couldn't tell the difference other than the 2m seemed to last longer. YMMV. I've heard that the 5m stuff is nasty shit. Some guys even stated some scarring can happen. Remember if you spray more than likely it will get back on you. You need to be prepared to continue to operate even after being sprayed. |
The stuff i use is red river pepper spray, 2% oc and 5.3 million shu. It works well although i usally get some blowback from it. |
I use it all the time and am exposed less than 10% of the time and only minimly then. The spray shoots farther but I prefer the fog which is much, much more effective. We use 10%. |
Spraying dogs and spraying attacking humans is very different. |
between being an instructor and actual field use, i have sprayed hundreds of people. i get some back on me now and then, mostly in the fight after exposure, but i would say that i get dosed enough to bother me maybe 10% of the time. just watch the wind and watch where you partner is spraying! |
I wish i could use 10% to spray the dogs up here. |
I have spryed dogs but I probably spray 20 people for every dog. The fog works better on people. It gets into thier lungs as well as thier eyes. Ya can't run or fight very well if you can't breathe. |

Buy the stuff that is made in Wyoming. I also vouch for testing it on momma, too. Why? Because she has to know what it is going to feel like so she can keep fighting through it when she gets the over-spray AND... for if she has to go to court she can tell the fuckhead attourny who is defending the bad guy that she knows what it feels like. |

What you want to look at is the capsaicinoid content of the pepper spray. Capsaicins are the active ingedients in the spray.... The higher the content, the more potent the spray. The percentage on the can is misleading, because it merely refers to how much of the content of the can is pepper spray, and how much is propellants, carriers, emulsifiers, etc. If you have a can of 10% spray with a capsaicinoid content of 20%, it's going to hurt more than a can of 30% spray, with a capsaicinoid content of only 5%.....make sense? Oh, and Freeze +P hurts like shit.... I know from experience. For a better understanding, read more HERE. |

I agree with trying it out on yourself so you have a clue what can happen if you do not pay attention to how the wind is blowing. I think they have a foam version or something that is about the hardest to have blow back at you, but that was me reading different stuff at the gun store and not me trying them all out on a windy day. I personally bought some stream stuff to have around. Another option you might want based on some thoughts about legal problems after the fact is my gun store has exactly what some of the local police use. I consider it to be about like carrying the same weapon and ammo the police use. Some people like the idea and others poo poo it. Best of all, this is a tag for more info when I get a chance to read some more tomorrow. |
It's for that reason that I don't want to use OC spray. What if the attacker trained himself to operate after being sprayed? Even the Freeze +p with CS would be the best bet |
hands down, the worst choice. |
it works best when it gets in your eyes or respiratory system. just think about spraying yourself with a spray bottle of water and a can of shaving cream. also, the person sprayed usually wipes their face, now they have hands of the foam and you are going to have to fight with them, when he clocks you in the face with a pepper foam covered fist, you get as much or more than he did. |
Well if you would just stop attacking people, maybe you wont get sprayed anymore!!! On a serious note though, I have been inquiring about OC spray because we have now some jackass who is trying to abduct kids in our neighborhood and my daughter walks to the shoping center where this idiot has tried to take a girl. I asked a local sheriff's deputy on age restriction. Being that she is only 13, It says that pepper spray cannot be "Sold to Minors" but nothing about posession. The deputy told me to give her a note stating that I allow her to have it. Im sorry but if it boils down to two choices of a) her defending herself b) her getting attacked I will take my chances with "a" She is a good kid with firearms experience and has good discipline. |

BTW... who was it here that had a "run in" with some asshole in a supermarket that had to use Fox? In the same light... anyone here (non-LEO) had to use OC spray in a self defense situation? Only reason why I say NON LEO is because they have more training and are more mentally prepared rather than an average Joe who doesnt have to face this every day. |
The correct answer is Fox. I have been a chemical irritant instructor for the last 10 years. Fox FTW. BC |
The fog does work well. I just like streams better. The fog just seems to get everywhere. |
|
The stuff sucks (to get hit with). For that reason, as someone mentioned LEO training to deal with the effects, might I recommend some of the newer foam or gel sprays. Just as strong as most mentioned but limits the sprayback to her and the kids. I can't imagine the pain for a child to get hit with this stuff. Worth looking into. |

Let me tell you about Fox I carry it in my side pants leg pocket and while welding on a trailer laying on the ground rolling back and forth i must of hit it and it sprayed in my pants. I did not know this until my leg started to burn like a son of a bitch. Before i figured out what had happen i was wiping it off with my hand and pulling at my pants wounding why my leg was burning. So after i figured out that my OC went off in my pants im thinking this shit is pretty good it really burns, at the same time i reach up and itch the corner my eye. Man!!! just that little bit on my finger burned the fuck out of my eye GOOD STUFF And my leg burned all day until i got home and took a shower. |
