I need to lose some weight.  I have an extra 20 lbs around my gut that I need to get rid of.  I used to run alot but have gotten lazy, plus I dont like running in the winter or rain days, etc..

How effective is a treadmill at getting and staying in shape and losing weight?

I know the other half of the weight loss equation is consumption, calorie intake, etc..   I have a strategy on that as well.

But for now, I am mainly interested in what you think about using a treadmill to get into shape and lose weight.

Any advice on how much to spend, what brands to avoid, etc.  is appreciated.

Since the treadmill "pulls" the ground under your feet it isn't quite a good of a workout as actually running.  Back a few years ago when I was running 5 days a week I could run on the treadmill til the cows came home, but could only do a couple miles if I was running on a track.  Good thing to do to make up for that is dial in some elevation when you're running on it.

Go to Smooth Fitness, I just bought one six months ago, runners' treadmills, not those rickety ones you see at discount stores.

As above, dial in a 4% grade to simulate a real run.

Smooth makes some good ones, that's for sure.

As for price, if you can't afford at least $2,000, you're better off going to a gym.  The cheaper ones just aren't built for running and have many other issues.
