In North Carolina one has to get a sheriff's permit to buy or transfer a crossbow.

Do any other states require a permit for crossbows and other like weapons?

Thanks

Not in LA. At first I thought you were talking about hunting. You can hunt with a cross bow during bow season if you are handicap or over the age of 65 I think. May have to go look the age part up.

Is that a law from the 1700's?

Not even a background check in Colorado.

1993 actuallly.

NC also used to require a permit from the sheriff to buy  a dagger, slungshot, blackjack, metal knuckles or bowie knife!

At least that part was repealed.

Is that different than a pistol permit?

I have a CCW so I suppose that takes care of it.

Crossbow and pistol purchase permit are one and the same.

In 1993 a law was passed requiring a pistol purchase permit for  crossbows:

HERE YA GO:

Article 52A.

Sale of Weapons in Certain Counties.

§ 14‑402.  Sale of certain weapons without permit forbidden.

(a)       It is unlawful for any person, firm, or corporation in this State to sell, give away, or transfer, or to purchase or receive, at any place within this State from any other place within or without the State any pistol or crossbow unless: (i) a license or permit is first obtained under this Article by the purchaser or receiver from the sheriff of the county in which the purchaser or receiver resides; or (ii) a valid North Carolina concealed handgun permit is held under Article 54B of this Chapter by the purchaser or receiver who must be a resident of the State at the time of the purchase.

It is unlawful for any person or persons to receive from any postmaster, postal clerk, employee in the parcel post department, rural mail carrier, express agent or employee, railroad agent or employee within the State of North Carolina any pistol or crossbow without having in his or their possession and without exhibiting at the time of the delivery of the same and to the person delivering the same the permit from the sheriff as provided in G.S. 14‑403. Any person violating the provisions of this section is guilty of a Class 2 misdemeanor.

(b)       This section does not apply to an antique firearm or an historic edged weapon.

I think Michigan only restriction on them is for hunting.

During bow season, to use a crossbow, you must be disabled in a way that you cannot pull a regular bow.
anyone can use them during rifle deer season though.

Wow, that's not what I'd call progressive hunting laws.

In Ohio, I think the most recent estimates are that 85% use crossbows during bow season. They do make them here though, so that may play into it.

And you southerners complain that we have restrictive laws!? In OH I know of no restrictions of crossbows, and you can hunt with them just like any other bow!

Not this N. Carolinian.  For a State located in the "south", it's NOT a very gun friendly state.

At least open carry is legal

In VA you do not have to have a permit to buy one.  This last season they were made legal for anybody to hunt with

Damm, I knew NC had some strict laws about sherrif's purchase permits for handguns, but I didn't know it covered crossbows too.
No permits required to purchase Crossbows or handguns in VA. No restrictions on private sales of pistols or gifts of crossbows or pistols either.
My 2 sons wouldn't be getting those 2 SIG 226's for Christmas that I just got from CDNN if we lived
in NC.

I guarantee you NC will be the last state to totally legalize crossbows for hunting (you have to be disabled right now to use one)

NC also requires a permit from the clerk of superior court for a blank firing handgun.

Been that way since 1959

Ohio is definately the cross bow capital of the world.  Almost every hunter I know has one.  I hardly ever go for deer gun season anymore (shotgun only).
