I am trying to figure out what is wrong with my girlfriends car. Its a 2004 Lexus SUV.

Here's the problem:

If you listen to the radio with the engine off and the key in the "ON" position the battery will die after 20 minutes or so. I mean dead. No horn. No Starter. After a quick boost with jumper cables the car is fine. Taking these steps over and over produce the same results. Could there be a short in the system somewhere?

Note: She had a "custom" shop install some TV's when the car was new but later had the same shop remove them because they sucked.

Note: I listen to the radio in my car all the time like this and never have a problem.

Why not in the accessory position while listening to the radio?

The radio doesn't work in with the key in the ACC position?  If it doesn't, then you need to run the radio power wire to a terminal in the fuse box labeled ACC not POWER/12V.

If you are running the radio with the key in the ON postion and the radio does work in the ACC position then   .

The CLOCK wire goes to POWER/12V.  "They" may have switched the CLOCK wire with the radio POWER wire.

I haven't checked if it works in ACC position. Why would the "ON" position drain the battery in 20 minutes? That seems unreasonable.

Sounds like you figured out your own issue.

Sounds like that shop sucks really bad.

I'd go in their raising hell if they deny any of this.

Wouldn't a 2004 be covered by warranty still?  Or might that have been voided by the work that was done?

In the ON position, all the car is energizing all the computerized crap and the fuel pump etc, So your amp draw can be a significant tax.

Also, are the running lights/headlights/tailights on?

Does she still have an upgraded stereo courtesy the shop?  If so draining the battery would be easy.

Also,  if you have a short you should be popping fuses/circuit breakers.

Easy fix:  don't listen to the radio without the car running

Everything is back to the factory configuration.

I am still wondering why I can run the radio in my Honda with no problem.

+1 , battery sounds like it is holding what is refered to sometimes as a "surface charge" pull the battery  &  get it tested.

JBravo223:  Does your lady friend have an after-market stereo system that draws a lot of power, ie powerful  power amps and sub-woofer?
