I am looking at buying some land that I am going to have to put a septic tank on when I build a home. Do you guys have any idea what the cost is typically for a septic tank? This would be in the ozark mountains in NW Arkansas if terrain is a factor in the cost. It is a pretty rocky area. Thanks in advance.

Here in GA where the world is made of sand, it costs about $3500, more or less depending on size.

3500 just for the tank?  or the whole system?

too many varibles, i install septics on a daily basis, and they can cost from 8000 to 80000 just for residentials.  Commercial systems, well, the skys the limit.

new one going in under water

old one, right before I broke it, and filled it in to tie the home into sewer.

Around here 3500 is pretty much the norm for a typical residntial (3-4BR 1500-2500sqft)for everything. In this area the ground is very sandy, and there are lots of contractors competing. There are probably much different enviormental policies as well.

These are prices friends and family members have paid in the last few years on new construction homes.

Are you standing where I think you are?

depends
If you end up with a simple system and tank the tank is the big $ item. In other areas due to soil types and certain regulations you might have to pay a surveyor to do a topo map, stake out the system and do an as-built map, also pay an engineer to design the system after the surveyor does the topo. Then depending on the design you might have to purchase a pump ,pump chamber, and a lot of gravel, sand, and fill in addition to the septic tank.
Your town or county health dept/building dept should be able to tell you what is required in your area, you might also have to do some soil testing which can be anything from the local inspector with a post hole digger ($25-$50 fee) up to a giant track backhoe and a civil engineer makeing your property look like swiss cheese (up to a couple days for the backhoe ouch!)
Up here in ct some of the horror stories go up to $30 k but we have nasty soil in our area and gravel and sand cost is high due to the fact that none of the local towns allow sand/gravel operations.
If you find the local guys tell you horror stories you should make a condition of the sale transaction that you can do the soil testing (at your cost ) to determine what type of system will be necessary. You risk the cost of the testing but don't run the risk of owning land that can not be built on (or if the system is going to be wicked expensive you might be able to bargin the price down)
Chances are  this isn' t going to be anything like this, most likely a local guy with a small backhoe and dumptruck can build you a system in a day or two.
Septic tanks can vary in price as the price includes delivery and depends how far you are from  the plant
