i was cutting a lockbox off of a door a little while ago, and all of a sudden my dremel decided it only wanted 2 speeds, off and full power.  it has been like this ever since.

i had it set at about 6 or 7 when it happened.  it was running hot, but not much hotter than usual.  batteries were about 1/2-2/3 depleted.  it still is either on full or off now, even though it has been re-charged and cooled.

anything i can do to fix it, or am I humped?

check your brushes, well they're solid but the round things on the side, its a wear part that you replace, when you get the metal hot it gets soft and it wears faster, it's like 10 bucks for the two

When Dremel was owned by Emerson(?) they had an incredible service dept and would refurbish your Dremel for almost nothing.  If it is more than just the brushes, call CS and see what they can do.

i just opened it up and it's full of sawdust.... i'm thinking maybe some of it was metal dust that shorted something out.... is this possible?

i blew it out with compressed air and it's still doing the same thing.... what are these "brushes" of which you speak?

How do you find time for things such as a Dremel?

Sounds like the contacts on the switch went out.. This is common with dremels.. Contact Dremel and see about getting a new switch assy..

Dremels are overpriced pieces of shit.  Mine can barely handle cutting one bolt.

dude, your not useing it right. The dremel works on speed, you don't press into it when you cut and you use the correct cutting wheel. I cut my muffler off with mine, big hardend steel locks, you just need the right cutting wheels. If you want to know anything about it, IM me.

+1 pressing too hard and not allowing the high rpm to do it's job usually results in disentegrating cutting wheels.  Those little bastards create some stinging shrapnel.

with the right cutting wheel, even 5/8" lag bolts are easy prey...

You need the reinforced cutting disc if you want to cut through some big stuff. My dremel makes quick work of cutting anything from tin to bolts.

I had those.  I went through 6 of them while cutting off the 8 aluminum bolts on my boat transom.

I've had that Dremel for 12 years, I've only used it four times.  Useless...

How long have you had it?  Mine was about 1 year out of warranty when it did the same thing.  I packaged it up and sent it back to their service center in Racine, WI, with a copy of the receipt and an explanation of the problem.  It showed back up at my place via UPS in less than a week.  No charge.

Their customer service department is quite good.  Go to their website and find the customer service page.  It has instructions on what to do.

You should have two carbon blocks w/springs accessible by removing two covers on opposite
sides of the tool.  Refer to the manual you threw away with the box.

the handpiece makes the difference on the Foredom. I think most of the motors are the same but I bought mine way the hell back in 1983

YOur switch is bad.  It happened to me.  It is a $25 part.  Shit can it.  Look closely at the silkscreened patch the contacts ride on.  Part of it will be missing.

He said it was battery operated... so no brushes.
