Magic Carpet Ride- Steppenwolf You Really Got Me- Van Halen Livin' on a Prayer- Bon Jovi |
You got beat up by the cool kids, didn't you? My prom theme was "Pour Some Sugar On Me", I swear. Parents and teachers hated it, but we honored the spirit of the song after the dance was over. |

I don't even remember my Senior Ball's theme song, but I *do* remember the Sophomore dance's theme that year, because I thought it was a HORRIBLE dance song: "Never Tear Us Apart" by INXS Why this song was selected as a dance theme song, I'll never understand. It's too slow, too loud, has long breaks, wailing sax, and is just WRONG. But I was dating a Sophomore, and of course I went to the dance. I DJ'ed the Junior Prom and attended the Senior Ball. The idiot Vice Principal sold everyone on the idea that we should have both a DJ *and* a band. I tried to explain that a DJ negates the need for a band, and that people wanted to pay attention to their dates and friends, not some band. But several of the student council girls were big Modern Rock fans, in a school whose dances mostly consisted of Freestyle Dance, R&B, and Rap/Hip-Hop at the time, so they took the oppertunity to book a Modern Rock cover band, while the DJ played everything else. Now, I *liked* Modern Rock, and still do, but as a DJ, I knew that this wasn't what the bulk of the people at the dance wanted to hear. After about 90 minutes, the DJ took a break so the band could play a set. Their first two songs cleared the floor, so I ran up and suggested a few songs that might keep them from being lynched. As I knew it would, "I Melt With You" went over well, and they managed to get the dance floor half-full for a couple of songs. After a 25 minute set, they turned it over to the DJ again. The band was supposed to play another set, but the VP, after *finally* accepting that the band wasn't well-received, asked for a voice vote, which went overwhelmingly to letting the DJ play. I felt bad for the band, but it wasn't their fault; they shouldn't have been booked in the first place. Anyway, I can tell you that the song with the best crowd response during the Junior Prom that year was Run-D.M.C.'s "You Be Illin", which was almost a year old but still huge. Also, the Beastie Boys' "Fight For Your Right" was big then. -Troy |
Quite a few 35 ish aged people on this board. We begged ours to play 2-live-crew We want some Pu*** and he shot us down. |
I couldn't get away with playing the full uncensored version of that at school, but I *always* played the 12" of "Get It Girl", which was a better dance song anyway. Always a crowd favorite. I did play a home-made edit of We Want Some P***y. Not that the editing mattered; the crowd would always shout the words... One of the funniest moments in HS for me was riding back home on a bus with the cheerleaders from some event (I had ran the audio for them), when they spontaneously started singing that song. Imagine 25 or so girls singing "Me and my homies like to play this game..." at the top of their lungs. When they got to the "...like a rat does cheese" line, I almost passed out from laughing so hard. ![]() -Troy |
I go all the way back to 85 with 2 Live Crew "Revelations." I was also big into Techno Hop crews like Unknown DJ, Egyptian Lover (aka Jamie Jupiter) and World Class Wrecking Kru. But we were definitely bumping 2 Live, Shy D and JDC. I still have all those 12" singles. |
Same here....but to add content: "Stairway to Heaven" -Led Zepplin |

I do remember a song by a chic called Vitamin C- Vitamin-C: Graduation (friends forever) And so we talked all night about the rest of our lives Where we're gonna be when we turn 25 I keep thinking times will never change Keep on thinking things will always be the same But when we leave this year we won't be coming back No more hanging out cause we're on a different track And if you got something that you need to say You better say it right now cause you don't have another day Cause we're moving on and we can't slow down These memories are playing like a film without sound And I keep thinking of that night in June I didn't know much of love But it came too soon And there was me and you And then we got real cool Stay at home talking on the telephone with me We'd get so excited, we'd get so scared Laughing at our selves thinking life's not fair And this is how it feels 1 - As we go on We remember All the times we Had together And as our lives change Come whatever We will still be Friends Forever So if we get the big jobs And we make the big money When we look back now Will our jokes still be funny? Will we still remember everything we learned in school? Still be trying to break every single rule Will little brainy Bobby be the stockbroker man? Can we ever find a job that won't interfere with a tan? I keep, I keep thinking that it's not goodbye Keep on thinking it's a time to fly And this is how it feels Repeat 1 La, la, la, la… Yeah, yeah, yeah La, la, la, la… We will still be friends forever Will we think about tomorrow like we think about now? Can we survive it out there? Can we make it somehow? I guess I thought that this would never end And suddenly it's like we're women and men Will the past be a shadow that will follow us 'round? Will these memories fade when I leave this town I keep, I keep thinking that it's not goodbye Keep on thinking it's a time to fly Repeat 1 (3x) |
Sorta. Wasn't fun in any case. And I made it through four years of that without shooting up my fellow students or teachers. |

My prom date was an asshole, and I'm still annoyed I wasted that much money on one night. In other words, I don't remember the songs played at my prom. ETA: Now I remember the theme song was "Here's to the Night" by Eve 6. I only remember it because I tracked down my date, dragged him onto the dance floor and said "I spent $200 on this fucking dress. You're dancing with me for the last song." |

Can't say I remember any. I didn't go to prom until I was 21 (with my wife of 4 years, I might add). Only noteable song I recall from high school senior year(s) was (IIRC) Pink's "Graduation". God I hate that song. EDIT: Er, I guess it was by "Vitamin C". The only reasons I remember it are: a) the dumb girls in my class kept playing over, and over, and over, and... as did the radio at the time. b) I hated the people in my class; they were half-watt bulbs. (small private school, 12 people in graduating class) c) It was done to Pachabel Canon in D, which is a song I've always liked (even since my yoot), which I first heard in an Air and Space Museum movie about air baloons around age 8. ![]() EDIT2: d) the lyrics are positively idiotic, catering to the kind of people who never think; thank you poster above for reminding me how much I wanted to claw my brain out! |
Home schooled? And you're going to be going to public high school for the first time? Brave man! |
