You found a luna moth.

As with all Saturniidae, the adults do not eat or have mouths. They only mate and reproduce -- because of this they only live about a week.

So take pity on it.

Let it go, don't kill that poor thing.

I determined it's not flesh eating, unless it sneaks inside, it's free to live its own life.

One of them, not the largest.

Atlas moths are considered to be the largest moths in the world in terms of total wing surface area (upwards of c. 400 square cm or 65 square inches). Their wingspans are also amongst the largest, from 25-30 cm (10-12 inches). Females are appreciably larger and heavier.

Not surprising.  There were/are spiders in the woods at Ft. Bragg as big as basketballs.*  Giant, fanged, man-eating moths are no big shock.
*Well, the seemed as big as basketballs when I somehow got them on me.  Upon closer inspection, they were usually only as big as baseballs.
