I need help choosing an affordable (<500-600) all aorund lens for my Digital Rebel XT.  I photograph a little bit of everything - sports , nature, landscape, etc.  I realize there is no perfect all-around lens for everything, but could use some advice.

Well, the Canon 17-85 IS is about that price range and is an okay all-around lens for a crop camera.  There is also the new Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4 lens and the various superzooms in 18-200 and 28-300 by Tamron and Sigma.
Really though I think your best bet is not to put all your lens eggs into one basket.  Do you have the kit lens?  Keep that for now for use for landscapes and such.  Put $100 into a 50mm f1.8 lens, which will be good for low light and portraits.  Then put $200 into a Sigma APO 70-300 f4-5.6 which will take care of your wildlife needs for now.  It's a cheap lens, but optically it's very good, much better than the cheaper Canon telezooms in that range.
Then take another $300-400 and get a Tamron 28-75 f2.8 or a Sigma 24-70 f2.8 (you can find them used for around $300 on the Buy/Sell boards at www.fredmiranda.com and save yourself some money) for use as a sports lens.
That would be my best reccomendation.
Barring that, keep your 18-55 kit lens to use for landsapes and buy a Canon 70-200 f4L to use for sports and wildlife.
