I went yesterday for the consultation for Lasik. I decided to go with the regular one instead of the Customview.
The Customview is the one that is not supposed to cause halos at night, but its 1299 per eye compared to 599 per eye that I'll pay for the regular Lasik.
I'll let you know how it goes after the 28th.

I had my lasik done over a year ago (OCT 04) and still see better than 20/20. I am at 20/15 with 20/14 left eye and 20/18 right eye. My g.f. paid for it but it was 3400 total and I have NO regrets. Night vision is great, eyes don't get dry anymore...LOVE IT

I got PRK about six months ago.  Initially I did have problems at night with seeing "stars," lights appearing to look like star bursts; however, now I have no problems seeing at night.  I am very pleased with the results for the record.

Wife was worse than 20x400 in both eyes.
She had lasik done 5 years ago.
She still says it was the best $5000 she has ever spent.
I'm 20x20, and she can see better than I can in most situations.
Her vision is actually better than mine at night.

The only time I can "out see" her is on certain color combinations.
She can see white letters on a blue background better than I can.
I can see black letters on a white background better than she can.

She has zero night-vision issues at all.

And this is with Lasik technology that is ancient compared to what is available today.

Don't hesitate.  Do it now.

I had PRK done on one eye last week at Bethesda.  So far, my night and day vision sucks.  However, I expect it fully heal without hazing.  The price was right.  Thanks taxpayers.

I had lasik about 4 years ago, never had an issue with night vision or day vision.  I actually see better in the dark now than I did before.  Also only had the "halos" from the lights for about a month, and those weren't bad.

Tag for replies.  I am looking into this as well.  What is the difference between the two processes?  How long do the procedures take?  We have Canada nearby where a lot of friends have gone and had good results.  I would like to keep it here in the state's and not far in the event there is a problem.  I can take a pre tax deduction through work to pay for the surgery.

Thanks

Mike

The star bursts, or halos were quite substantial, to the point I didn't feel safe driving.  I mean you could drive if you had to, but oncoming cars were very blurry and made it hard to see the road and concentrate.  It was better after about a month, at least to the point where I could drive safely at night.

I don't know..there are things to shop for bargains on (ammo, guns, cars, etc.) but discount eye surgeons aren't one of those things in my book.

About 2 months ago I had the Intralase "all laser" procedure which uses a laser to create the flap instead of a blade. It has a more 'plug like' edge contour and is supposed to lock-in better with less chance of a flap displacement.
This was also combined with the wavefront "custom vue" which supposedly gives better outcomes regarding visual quality. Although wavefront is fairly common now the process was pretty much state of the art by the most popular surgeon in this area.

That said, I still had slight halos at night but the quality of vision was MUCH MUCH better than before with my relatively minor astigmatism (~1.5). The overall effect was actually rather pleasant, I didn't mind and it didn't impair my vision. It goes away after a few months.

Within 3 weeks it was 80% improved and barely noticeable.

My night vision is better now than it was with glasses. Just so you know, my previous vision uncorrected was pretty decent at around 20/30 but the astigmatism gave poor crispness/sharpness particularly at night. Before surgery I didn't drive at night or in the rain without glasses, it felt really unsafe.

I paid $4500.

Are there cheaper surgeons who would do just as good? Of course.
Just make sure you pick a guy who has a few hundred procedures under his belt. You don't want to be his learning case.
Be aggressive, ask him about his complication rate, his revision rate, patient satisfaction, etc. Most are pretty open with sharing this info. After all it's your eye he's going to cut open.

I will say that for 3-4 hours after surgery it stung worse than I expected. Also I'm more sensitive to bright lights/outdoor sunlight than I was before (this too has gotten better in the last 2-3 weeks)

The Lasik process (for me) was they put me under this machine, cut a "flap" of my eye and zapped me, then put the flap back down.  People fear that this flap can get knocked off years down the road.

.....but I do brazilian jiu jitsu 4 times a week, and I think if the flap wasn't attached very well, it would have already fallen off.

I had lasik done three years ago and am pretty happy with it. I went from 20/400 and bad astigmitism to 20/25. I had glasses for 30 years.  I do have some night vision issues, bright lights have some starbursting but no halos. When driving, my instruments are bright and clear, but tailights and headlights are blurry.
I think this is because I have large pupils and I'm actually thinking about going back in for a checkup and possible "enhancement"

Ahhh, no.  That is Bethesda, as in Bethesda National Naval Medical Center.

Try looking in Canada.  I had mine done at Lasik MD in Montreal a few years ago. Even with the travel and hotel it was still about 1/2 the cost of doing it locally. ALso, they have been doing this type of surgery for a lot longer than they have been in the US, so the doctors were much more experienced.

I've researched this.  Eye surgery costs vary a LOT.

But don't choose your doctor based on price.
