Ok I want a new rifle. I have decided on either an FAL or a CMP garand. Which will be cheaperto buy, shoot, and maintain?

Get the CMP Garand. They won't be available much longer and they're part of American history. Better sights too.

Really though, where would you suggest that someone start in the FAL world?

I see cheap mags and then get scared off............

I've got both, but enjoy shooting the garand the most of all of my rifles.  Plus it is an awesome piece of American history.  There's quite a bit of 30.06 surplus available from the CMP, surplus .308 has been drying up lately.

Gotta do both.

They are both such awesome rifles and both are mandatroy for any mil style weapon collection.

M1 - history. Cheap. May not always be available. Viable MBR in it's own right, even today IMO.

FAL - One of the finest MBRs out there. Reliable and very easy to maintain. Essential part of any survival package.

No pistol grip? No thanks.
I love FALs.
