does that include rotary-type mags, like for a 10/22? |
if i have ammo on hand. i keep 2 SHTF mags loaded with the good stuff at all times, and then my 10 plinking mags are dependent on my ammo supply. right now i only have 90rds of ammo, all loaded in mags
believe so since they are also always loaded and no problems with mine. |
How long should mags be loaded?
I've had mine loaded for a week, and I'm worried. |
A few guys had loaded surplus mags from vietnam and no problems reported
I have all the mags for my SL8-1 (home defense rifle), 1 - 30 round AR mag and 1 - 20 round AR mag loaded with XM193. I have 2 mags for my Sig P220 loaded with Speer Gold Dots.
I also have a bunch of AR mags loaded with practice ammo, and the rest are unloaded. I just bought a case of Q3131 today so I think I'm going to load some more defense mags in a little bit here. |
If you can answer this question "Yes" you don't have enough mags.
Or too little ammo |
I Keep 10 loaded at ALL times in Bando's. The rest are on my safe or in my range can/bag ready to go shootin'
Nah.
Not that worried about it. If I can't kill what's coming after me with 56 rounds of .223 and, 18 rounds of 12 gauge, I'm probabably screwed. |
A shame you didn't have a .45 isn't it? |

No .223 but if I can't kill it with 18 12 gauge, then I have 52 40s&w, 32 .45's, 5 .308, and 300 .22's and if it makes it through that I have a problem. |

I keep 6 loaded 30's(28) in the safe but I have more mags in different spots than I really know. Im not even sure how many I have. I keep 4 30 rounders in my 3 gun stuff along with a 40 rounder that get most of the use. I know I have a few, maybe 5 to 8 20 rounder somewhere as well. |

WIll someone please explain to me how usefull a unloaded magazine is? Kind of like a
car with no gasoline. |
2 mags loaded with the good stuff. Hopefully 24 rounds of .45 is enough until I can get more mags/ammo
What does? Any metallurgists on the board who could give us a scientific reason for this? |

Three mags for my Glock 22C
Three mags for my Glock 23 Three mags for my Glock 21 |

No, I'm in Alaska not back in Afghanistan... Why have loaded mags laying around the house?

Why have unloaded mags laying around the house? |

It's my understanding that it's not the compression on the springs that's bad, but rather the use of them; ie the compression CYCLES that matters. Therefore, it's okay to leave them loaded. At least that's my bullshit theory...... |

1 30 round mag of Q3131A
2 mags loaded with Golden Saber HPJ +P's for the G36 |
Well, I gotta confess guys, when I saw this poll, I thought " yea, I wanta know, because I think I might be impressed by some of the mag/round counts "
I have realized that it has been a year or so since I have shopped for or bought any mags A N D That about two years ago I went SLAM O.C.D. on buying mags/ammo I'm talkin 4 beta C's (2 loaded with T.A.P. 40grn. @ $25.00 per 25 - 2 loaded with T.A.P. 75grn @ $32.00 per 25) USGI 30's = 100 Then I looked over at all the empty ones and said wow..............never realized I had that problem till now. Now that I got all this shit, recon it's gonna be any good when I need it ? Swat................passin out fer tnoigt |

7 rds in a shotgun, 7 rounds in a .22 mag rifle for dogs and misc critters , a Beretta with 2 mags for work which doubles as a house gun when I'm home.
I guess i'm just not as prepared for Russian paratrooper zombies as you guys are. Unloaded mags are kept in a Homak safe in square tupperware bins. |
got 5 new from tapco 2 weeks ago, and loaded 'em up the moment i signed for the delivery.
i even keep the 9rd range mag loaded. at the mo, i have exactly 6 loose rounds of 5.56 when is southern ammo going off back order? |
Well, I'd have to open sealed bags of ammo... take the time to plug 28 rounds in a few mags. Find someplace to put the left-ever rounds that didn't fit in the mags. I just don't see much point in keeping loaded AR mags sitting around. I mean, why? Home defense? I've got an 870 for that, what human on the face of this Earth isn't intimidated by the sound of a racking shotgun? For a SHTF, Red Dawn scenario? C'mon, if it comes to that I'll probably get called to work anyway. There will be enough notice for me to think... "It’s time to start loading those mags." I've been to war, and I'll be going back. I don't feel the need to play war while I'm home. I'm not knocking anybody who feels the need to keep 87 mags loaded to the gill "just in case." I just chose not to. That is all, ~Dg84 |

In order to have loaded mags, one must first have decent ammo to put IN the mags, which can be a problem for college students like me.
As a result I have exactly 1 loaded AR mag, and all my plinking ammo is sealed up in ammocans. |
I have a 20 round AR-15 mag partially loaded, with 10 rounds, and a .44 Magnum speedloader in the top tray of my safe. Oh, yeah, a loaded Garand clip sits in there, too. I can't see any reason to load up ALL the magazines I own; spring tension issues don't even enter into it.
I feel "safe" enough sitting here with a loaded .45. |
I have plenty of ready to go mags loaded.
But I also have a bunch of range mags I leave unloaded until range time. |
+1 I don't see how anyone can have ALL their mags loaded all the time. You either have to own a very small gun collection/small number of mags. Or be an ammo whore. I have a few loaded mags 3 AR 30 round mags 3 HK91 20 round mags and 2 HK USP 45 mags. I don't even know how many mags I own, maybe 200+ and all different types the ammo bill would be too much to have kept loaded. |
It only takes 33 30 rounders to load up 990 rounds of ammo. I can do this and still have several empty 30 rounders and 20 rounders and drums for my ak rifles.
I also have a decent number of new in wrapper mags and drums as well. Since they are well packed I am leaving them alone and I won't be using them anytime soon. I decided during the mag ban that I wanted a footlocker full of magazines for each type of rifle I owned. I have reached that point with my ak rifles. I am still working on it with my fal rifles. I don't know where I will stop with my handgun magazines but I am working on that as well. Everyone can decide for themselves what is enough. I decided during the ban I would never overpay for a magazine again and with the ak rifles I never will have to do so again. As far as keeping them loaded, I like to grab a pile of magazines and go shooting. I don't load them the night before and I don't like to load magazines at the range. So being able to take that many loaded magazines to the range is a luxury and I enjoy it. |
That is correct. |

When the zombies come, do you really want to be saying, "I really should have loaded some mags yesterday."
