| I always see guys walking around at gun shows with a rifle slung over their shoulder and a for sale sign. I've been tempetd to buy sometimes but hesitent as how would I now if it were stolen or not. Is there some king of National registy online I could check or just not bother? |

In TN, a dealer is required to list the S/N on a buyers background check request. Theoretically, this is to check against the stolen gun S/N list that ATF supposedly keeps current. Most likely, a FFL could call this in for you for the NICS fee, i.e. pretending that you're buying the gun from him/her. Some police dept's will also do this for free as well. YMMV. |
there is a database of reported stolen firearms. you can take one to the police station and have them look it up. I can't remeber what it's called, something like NCIC? it's not publicly accessible because politicians are idiots. |
