18.  There was nothing to shave but the drill sergeant said "SHAVE!" so I did.

I had to shave the peach fuzz in basic training at 17. I didn't actually need to shave for several years after that though.

My hair is slow in some places and too fast in others... I only just started getting hair on my chest in the last few years... but I'm also getting hair growing out of my ears like a 70y/o man.

Started shaving at 15 and had a mustache on my first drivers license picture.

My oldest (11) is starting to get the fuzz on his lip and has a few stray hairs on his face.  Maybe in the next year or 2 he will start.

I'm 50 years old, I started shaving when I was 17 - I cut myself both times...

Actuallly I really was 17 when I started, I have a nasty beard that sometimes could use shaving twice a day!

You have a 17 year old son I never would have thought

I started when I was about 18 or 19 years of age.  Tell him not to let the hair grow to long or else the razor will pull it out rather than cut it.  If it's long use a set of clippers to get it short enough.

Probably 17 or so. To this day (I'm 26), I still can't grow a full beard. If I grow a mustache, it looks like one of those thin molester mustaches.

On the upside, I seem to take after my mother's side of the family in this regard. None of the men in her family can grow facial hair worth a damn, but all have a full head of hair until death. My grandfather didn't even turn grey until 60. No shit.

It pisses me off that I can't grow a goat, but if that's the price I gotta pay for having a full head of hair, so be it.

Like... 12 or so. I started getting hair on my face when I was pretty young. I had a pathetic attempt at a gotee. I look back on it now and think I must have looked like a freaking retard keeping the little bit of hair I had on my chin. I have a full gotee now. I'm too lazy, so I only shave once or twice a week. I always have that scruffy look going. I have a friend that's 27 and can barely grow facial hair.

+1

Here's some advice for your son.

The best time to shave is after a hot shower. If your hair is too long, trim it before hand. NEVER shave dry! I prefer shaving gel (I use Neutragena) over old fashioned shaving cream. Make sure you buy good quality razors. I haven't used disposables in YEARS. Schick Tracer FX or Gillette Mach 3 (I'm using this now) are where it's at. These are good quality razors. The refill blades may be slightly expensive, but they are well worth it. I only shave once or twice a week so I only change them out every month and a half or so. A 10 pack lasts me a whole year. Cheap razors can wear out faster, cause skin irritation, and probably cause in grown hairs though I think that has to do more with how you shave. Shave with the grain. Generally, you want to shave up below the jawline and down above it.

If he’s gonna grow a goat, get him a beard trimmer to keep it trimmed. I have had a pair of cheap Conair clippers that have lasted me about 8 years so I recently bought a Conair beard trimmer and it works great.

Does anybody else think young guys with a full beard look just plain weird???? There's something off about it.

I'm not too worried about going bald but if I do, I do. I have hair on my chest and stomach, but it's not like a freaking rug. It's pretty light and spready out. I don't have very dense/thick hair except on top of my head.

17, when I joined the Navy.  It was considered bad form for the company commander to find fuzz on your face at morning inspection.  They liked to use the rising sun to look very closely.

About 13. My mom stopped my one day after school and told me to stand still.

She grabbed a washcloth and started scrubbing furiously on my upper lip, thinking it was dirt.

She was a bit surprised when it didn't rub off. LOL

I hate shaving because my facial hair grows in about 6 different directions.  I can never get a really close shave, my skin gets irritated before i can shave with every grain.

Heh.  I'll be 30 later this year and I only shave maybe once a week if I remember to.  I buy the cheapest razors I can find and shave dry.  According to my father, sometime between 30 and 40 I'll start turning into a gorilla like he did.  But for now, I think I'll enjoy the lack of everyday razor burn even if I can only pull off a weak fuzzy catepiller mustache.  It doesn't sound like it's worth putting up with.

I was ~15 when Dad threw a new electric razor on my bed one evening after a Walmart run and said I needed to use it once a week, luckily I didnt have to endure a "now that you're becoming a man" speech for that one. Once-a-week lasted for about 6 months before I had to up it to every other day and another 3-4mo until it was every day.

My brother took a lot longer, he didnt need to shave (just had lots of peach fuzz) until he was ~16 and then only had to shave once a week until he was 18.

Even that he's now 22 and I'm 24, he doesnt get a five-o'clock shadow until around 10pm, mine shows up around 2pm.

If he dont need it often try an electric razor.  If he doesnt need it it should last him awile.  Some times I use electric to get rid of the scruffy look and then a blade to get close.
