Hey guys, I have the new RAZR from verizon and I was wondering how I would be able to hook it up to my laptop to put Mp3's on it for ringers.  I have the right USB cable, but for some reason its not connecting and recognizing the phone as a USB drive or something similar.

Thats because they want you to buy the ringers from them so they make money, they have it blocked. You need to "hack" it to allow for you to use it. Search google for the subject, there is plenty of info there.

Check your firmware...  If you have 0.2, KEEP IT, and don't let them upgrade you to 0.3, because Verizon completely removed the Bluetooth ObEx profile in 0.3 (they had forgotten to do so in 0.2).

And, yes, you'll need to hack your phone, but that's not hard.

I have the motorola version but I had a similar problem with my phone (couldn't connect using the usb cable).  I did manage to get it working using the blue tooth connection though.  Try that.  :)

Hacking your phone is one way. The other is buying this: Data Suite
Fortunately this program came with my phone and did not have to buy it. Its pretty cool cause you can take your MP3 file on your PC and clip em to make them ringtones. Also an pics you have can be your background of photo ID for call. Not to mention being able to save you phonebook to your PC.

I just bought one also and its not user friendly at all.  I find ringtones on the net, then copy them to mu pc, then email them to the phone.  Problem is, they come out with a low volume.  And I cant figure out how to erase the ringtones that I placed on the phone but dont want to keep

Buying the Motorola Phone Tools software will get you partial success.  I don't know about Verizon but I've heard, and experienced, that Cingular has Motorola leave out portions of the RAZR's normal software that would otherwise allow you to connect and do certain things.  Even with the software it is very difficult, ro impossible, to upload files to the phone.  They want you to buy from them, as others have said.

The thing to remember is that you should NEVER buy a GSM phone from any US cellular vendor. They all mutilate the software to strip out features that they would rather that you dind't have, or that they want to sell to you.

Buy unlocked, unmutilated phones.

The slightly hard part is finding out how to configure them to use all of the features such as web, email, sms etc. The cellular vendors will be unhelpful to obstructive -- even though most of them have this info burried deep in their tech support websites as they have to allow third party phones, but they will not tell you where to get the info, and will try to tell you only their phones will work properly on their systems.
