Mine sleeps like that fairly often.  I figure it means he's pretty comfortable in his surroundings.  Only thing is, mine sleeps on the floor.

Trick photography at play here. Look very closely and you can tell the camera was held upside down while taking this picture.

They do this for the back mainly.  Try walking around on all 4's all day long and tell me how you think your back would feel at the end of the day.  It stretches it back the other way and relieves all the days tensions.  Rough life they have, you know.

+1

My Rott will sleep that way on occasion, but usually only in her cage... out in the living room she just sprawls out all over the place..she has a rug and blanket she "commandeers" in the living room.  (she has a custom-made pad for her cage with her name on it..my daughter made it)

It means that the dog's secure in his surroundings. otherwise he'd be curled up against a wall or sofa or something, since no one can sneak up on him from the direction of the wall/sofa

Sometimes. My mom's cat sleeps like that sometimes too. When he isn't slowly oozing off the top of the aquarium so he lands face-first on the floor and has to flee from the dog while in a semi-conscious state.

Yup.  Upside down, in the shape of a 'U'.  Sometimes like that with his head hanging off the couch, pointing towards the floor.

Hurts my back just looking at it.

My Labs sleep like that all the time,   fart and snore like hell,  man they look comfortable, total relaxation, no worries, life is good. I wish I could sleep as easy and as peaceful, with nothing to worry about, except food, water, and getting my belly rubbed. LUCKY DOGS!

I have two that sleep that way on a regular basis. It must be soothing on their back muscles, just like a human who sleeps on a firm mattress.

Our Beagle Dobe mix slept like that. He did it for all of his fifteen years. We called it "The Dead Cockroach".
