 They wanted Sadaam gone, wonder if they will say the same if the Mullahs in Iran are gotten rid of too.....  ANdy Israel 'may rue Saddam overthrow' Yuval Diskin is concerned Iraq's instability could spread west The head of Israel's domestic security agency, Shin Bet, has said his country may come to regret the overthrow of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. Yuval Diskin said a strong dictatorship would be preferable to the present "chaos" in Iraq, in a speech to teenage Jewish settlers in the West Bank. He also said the Israeli security services and judiciary treated Arabs and Jewish suspects differently. A Shin Bet veteran, Mr Diskin took over as Shin Bet's chief in May. When you dismantle a system in which there is a despot who controls his people by force, you have chaos. When asked about the growing destabilisation of Iraq, Mr Diskin said Israel might come to rue its decision to support the US-led invasion in 2003. "When you dismantle a system in which there is a despot who controls his people by force, you have chaos," he said. "I'm not sure we won't miss Saddam." Inequality The security chief was also asked to compare the treatment of Jews and non-Jews by Israel's security and judicial establishments. "I do not see equality in the way the system handles them when they are guilty of the same type of offence," he said. "If I had arrested a terrorist from Nablus and Eden Nathan Zaada [an Israeli army deserter who shot dead four Israeli Arabs on a bus in August], they wouldn't have received similar treatment in interrogation or court." Mr Diskin also said he thought Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon had made a mistake when he withdrew the Israeli army from the Gaza Strip last year without ensuring the Palestinian Authority could fill the security vacuum. "From a security perspective, I am opposed to handling over territories to the Palestinians unless we know there are officials there who will take control and commit themselves to upholding the law," he said. "If there are no such officials, then I am against handing over territories to Palestinian control." It's probably better that he is out of power. We had to go over too many times to smack him down. He evntually would hve gone off the deep end and did something really stupid , like acting like an Iranian President. |

It'd be a shame for the peace and tranquility Israel's enjoyed for almost 60 years to be disrupted by the fall of Saddam Hussein. But it's touching that the BBC is concerned.

Uh, Yuval Diskin, the head of Shin Bet is the one 'concerned'.... Missing Saddam Commenting on the situation in Iraq, the Shin Bet chief said that, "when one dismantles a regime in a state ruled by a strong tyrant you get chaos, as was the case in Iraq. I can see a point, though it's not really the one he's making - meaning he may not even see it himself. With Saddam, as with the Soviet Union, there was an identifiable enemy, a specific bogeyman vs. undefined or unclear evil. My counter to that would be that one no longer has that particular state to deal with, along with the greater power that comes from being a government. DEaling with a bunch of vagrants with some small explosives may be a pain, and surely is for those injured or killed by improvised bombs, it is not the same thing as an organized army coming at you, or the major weapons that a government is able to buy and field. Saddam is no longer sending SCUDS or their successors.

All that means is that he should 'know his stuff', not that he actually does. Again, does he miss the days when Saddam would financially reward the familes of those who killed and maimed innocent Israeli citizens? Or was he out to lunch when 39 Scud missiles hit Israel during the First Gulf War, courtesy of Saddam Hussein? His point, and its a good one from his perspective, is that Iraq has shifted from a known to an unknown.
MAY regret. Not sure might And he is right. They may regret it. He isn't sure. iraq has the potential to be another Iran. however, Israel's concerns are not the United States' concerns. The US could not have Saddam in power for a number of reasons. We have given them enough f-15s and f-16s to deal with whatever problems may emerge from the post-saddam Iraq. |

No one can say that Saddam is not about to pay for a whole lot of crimes at this time, and for that, the entire Free World, and God's people, can be thankful. So, are you postulating the Knesset chose someone for one of THE most important jobs in Israel (Head of Internal Security/Anti-Terrorism) who may not be up to the job?  ANdy ETA: In August 1990, he was appointed Director of the Dept. for Counter-terrorism, so I think he was aware of teh SCUD attacks. |

Saddam was a grat enemy of Israel, and contributed much to its misery. Now that he's gone, the suicide bombings in Israel have subsided. You can argue it's the security fence, it's internal Palestinian politics, of whatever, but the fact that Saddam is gone from power must be considered a great contributing factor, as well.
I was being facetious when I said maybe he didn't remember those attacks. If he really means that he is sad to see Saddam go, then he is quite unlike any mortal man who I have ever heard of, for certain. Eriuc The(Honest)Hun
