Ok, one of the lowlifes here chiming in.....
I tried to do the right thing and be a stay at home mom and raise my kids. So, no job skills. Kicked out the loser FINALLY after 12 years. So now I have to start all over. I can't support us all on minimum wage. Asshole got fired, so no child support. I totally NEED this support to get on my feet. I haven't applied for it yet because my pride keeps kicking me in the ass. I have side jobs. And I'm a freaking chick! Need some plumbing work, lemme know. Some yard work, lemme know. Flipping want your roof done, lemme know. Not everybody on flipping welfare is a loser. GOD DAMN, I HATE IT. But that's what it's there for. Not these losers that won't go flip fome GD burgers. I'd go flip some GD burgers if it would pay the rent and the GD sitter! |

I think that his point is, that this thread was stared by someone who is a full-time student with no expenses. He supposedly wants to apply for spending money. People like you are who the welfare system was created for. People like him are who we all hate for stealing our money. There is a big difference. I wish you luck. you are in my prayers. |

your one of very few that use the system to get back on their feet. so far in my line of work i can count on my hand the numbers of young adults/single moms ect that just had bad luck and need'd a fresh start. I can use all of arfcoms fingers to count the number of folks that are the lazy handout suckin leeches that suck the system dry! Personaly i say they keep welfare but you work for it,not just ask for a hand out then sit back and chill all day cuz you dont wanna work! |

Who paid for the scholarship? Is it state or federal? If so, you are ALREADY on welfare. Your not ASKING your parents for money is not the issue - it's whether they GIVE you free money. Do you TAKE money from your parents. Who pays for your rent and food? Where did you live while you had summer jobs? If you are just a college kid, who lives off his parents and government scholarships - then you need to shut your whiny mouth about whatever miniscule taxes you might have paid for a summer job.  People who TAKE welfare when they don't need it, are worthless scum. Are you worthless scum? If you are, then please leave your ROTC program immediately!!! Seriously - if this thread isn't intended to be sarcastic or facetious, then it's one of the most pathetic ones I've seen laterly on arfcom. |

He's a young man with no dependents and free room and board. You're a single mother struggling to support your children. He wants goverment money for luxeries. You are having trouble swallowing your pride to accept the help you need to feed your kids while you get back on your feet. He clearly has no pride to begin with. Yet you don't see a difference between your situation and his? We need a safety net in our society. Welfare and SSI / SSDI make up the bulk of that safety net. But people like you are treated poorly for using that safety net because of leeches like him who abuse the system and attempt to freeload. Your situation is a text book example of why we need such a system. His situation is a text book example of what can go wrong with any such system. |

 anyways, you should listen to him because he's right. tell you what, try pulling 50+ hours a week at work, and going to school full time. then come back and talk to us. i wish i didn't have to worry about where my money's coming from so i could put all my efforts into my education... so how about you pay my bills 9 months out of the year so i can be a full time student? i mean, it's only fair, right? i pay taxes, so i should get a free ride!!!!! |

I hate it when strangers assume I would do something jsut because they would.When we were both doctoral students in the late 90s my wife and I had a combined income of $5000 a year. Try living in D.C. for that!!! We could have gotten food stamps, the EIC, and all kinds of welfare. WE TOOK NOTHING!! You know what other doctoral students did? Some of them signed up for lots of drug testing clinical trials at the med school - getting injected with drugs as part of human trails before drugs can be approved. They didn't take welfare either. (Although they did get a lot of sympathy from the faculty )So don't give me this "you would all do it" bullshit. I've been there, and I didn't do it. We are still paying off school loans - my wife alone pays over $1000 a month in school loan payments out of her paycheck. Yeah, we could have taken handouts off other people's hard work, but we decided not to - because we really didn't NEED it. It's not like we were starving to death or didn't have access to federal loans. We knew we'd be able to pay back the loans, so why the hell would we deserve a free handout. Just because you can stick out your hand and grasp something for nothing doesn't mean that you have to, or that you should. |

Actually, you don't want to get welfare benefits...think of it in these terms; the more the government gives you, the more the government controls you... They will want to know about your assets, personal property, investments, money in the bank, properties and anything else you have (guns)...Before you can get anything, you will be reduced to below 1/2 the poverty rate and what they give you will not raise you out of poverty... |

Been a janitor at a detox center, which was far worse than the burger job. Cleaned bars. Bagged groceries. I actually have a very impressive collection of hair nets and name tags. Busted my ass to climb into higher paying positions. I'm working two jobs currently, and have for most of my adult life. Why exactly are you yelling at me? I'm on your side here. |

The fact that you can't imagine that there are actually people out there who wouldn't take goverment handouts that they didn't need speaks volumes about your character. It's a pity that you can't fathom such a thing. Makes sense though, it took me quite a while to get my mind wrapped around the idea that there were so many people like you in our culture. You and I were obviously raised very differently, and live in very different worlds. As far as your friend 'never ask(ing) for a dime from anyone' goes, you did read this thread, right? You have caught on to the little fact that your friend is receiving free room and board (which he apparently never asked for), but wants to use what's supposed to be a last ditch safety net as a source for spending money, right? Birds of a feather... Edit; Your post made me think of a Claimant I dealt with some years back. This woman was born and raised in this country. Yet she really believed that each and every person in this country gets a .gov check every month, and those of us who have jobs are simply greedy enough to want more money than .gov provides. She adamantly refused to believe otherwise. That was when I really started to realize how bad the culture of entitlement was becoming in our society. She believed that as completely as you appear to believe that it's 'normal' to take something that you haven't earned. You're as wrong as she was. |
