Depends on the wage structure where you live. It would be a VERY low wage in some areas and almost a liveable wage in others. As it's a NATIONAL MANDATE I think it distorts the wage structure in areas where the cost of living is low and is COMPLETELY useless in areas like suburban CA where ALL wages exceed the minimum wage. To show how it's wrong, what if instead there was a nationally mandated rent on a 2 bedroom apartment of $500 or $40 on a pair of Michael Jordan sneakers. Usually a minimum wage job is a temporary one and a relatively unskilled one. If there's a surplus of unemployed and unskilled it will be a factor in how high the wages are. Better to up the skill level than raise the wage to make it a liveable wage job. One strategy creates a better life, the other mediocrity. |

Why not just make the minimum wage $50/hour and all these problems will go away,,,,

I don't think that. |

I made my speakers just a little bit louder by putting an "11" on them, just like in Spinal Tap |

We need to have a national effort to LOWER the minimum wage. It will be hard on people at first, but it will eventually help improve the economy. Raising it is a vicious cycle that will just cause it to need to be raised again in a few years until we end up like Russia.
-Ben ETA I hadn't read the whole thread before, guess I am preaching to the choir again. |
MAke me wonder. Kids and old people aside, are there enough non mininum wage jobs for all 'adults'. Can one give every qualified adult a non mininum wage job? Or will someone always be just SOL? |
Lower it, hell. It should be abolished, ASAFP.
Everytime the minimum wages goes up, people who have been working for years, people who went on with their educations, everyone gets a pay cut. The minimum wage should not be raised, so that it can be "Minimum". You shouldnt be able to raise a family on it. You shouldnt be able to look at your paycheck and say "$6.44 an hour! Thats good money!" Its not something to be aspired to, it should be a lesson. |
All "minimum" wage is is just entry-level. Nothing MORE, nothing less. Entry-level pay. You start on it, you move to the next level. Sort of like a step ladder, and where you end up at is where you end up at. You don't stand on the bottom rung when you have the oppritunity to go to the higher rungs, but you don't want to. |

The 'minimum wage' is beloved of democrats/socialists the world over...stupid, lazy people vote for them because they promise them a 'minimum wage' they can 'raise their family on'...
Minimum wage = money for getting zero skills. My daughter gets the 'minimum wage' here in Britain, she's a stupid, lazy bitch too... ANdy |

Higher than Austin apparrently, because my burn rate exceeds $50,000 per year if I slash all non-luxury expenses. There is no way in hell I could make it on $15 per hour - twice that would be a little rough. |

What is the minimum wage there btw? |

2 quid and a pollywhacker an hour. It doesn't translate well into American money. |

Main (adult) rate for workers aged 22 and over £5.05 per hour Development rate for workers aged 18-21 inclusive £4.25 per hour (The development rate can also apply to workers aged 22 and above during their first 6 months in a new job with a new employer and who are receiving accredited training.) 16 and 17 year olds £3.00 per hour ANdy $/£ exchange rate $1.80/£ |

car wash I worked during the summer 5 years ago was minimum wage + whatever tips we got. |
If I only worked 40 hours a week, I'd make $16,640 per year. To live off of that money, you just have to make sure you don't waste it (and don't have any medical bills, but that's another story). Most people I know make close to half of what you said "who could even live on that?" Lot's of people do. Get out more often. I still have guys asking me for work for less than minimum wage to just make something. The only thing raising the minimum wage does is create more guys like that that can't find a job because more low-end jobs will disappear. Since increases my cost of doing business. Then I have to raise my rates to recover my extra labor expense then my customers raise their prices for their customers and so on. Raising the minimum wage has a horrible affect on the economy.z |

Andy-I did some conversions on a currency converter site: £5.05=$8.81 roughly £4.25=$7.41 roughly £3.00=$5.23 roughly (I say roughly because this site-xe.com-has a bunch of digits after the amount.) |

Don't mean to offend you Andy but |

minimum wage is for crackheads, losers and high school stundent. Anyone that can show up for work on time and follow basic instruction will trypically not be there for long.

$25,000 on necessary medical. $21,0000 takehome. No, doesn't work |
Latin, if it were French it would mean the economic principle behind surrendering your economy to the first invading German with sufficient rank. |
FightFor, does "necessary medical" mean employer-provided health insurance? |
Tell me about it deej! I work typically 45-50 hrs a week, at the end of the month I have to put in a couple of days often running to 17-18hrs straight, I don't get paid for half that overtime because I'm a Manager and expected to do 'extras'. This Christmas I stumped up £900 ($1600) on a 32" LCD TV for Mrs Vito, saved all year to afford that thing. Daughter and her wastard Husband come round after Christmas, "Hey Dad, nice TV, when Steve gets his Child Tax Credit in April he's buying a 42" plasma".... That's right, he's using his welfare money he's paid on top of their 'minimum wage' to support the kids to buy a frigging £1,500 ($2,700) TV.... ANdy |
necessary medical means medical treatments that are necessary the $25k figure is ABOVE and BEYOND what the employer provided health insurance covers. |
Tell you what Andy that would make me mad if my kid told me that...don't have any kids but still. Reminds me of the folks here in the States that buy steaks and liquor with their welfare cards and have Cadillacs and expensive cars. Now if your daughter and Steve WORKED for that TV like you and Mrs Vito did that would be a different story. |

Obviously you missed the Klinton 'Town Hall Meeting' where Klinton was asked by the CEO of Pizza Hut if he was aware that his proposed minimum wage increase would put thousands of Pizza Hut workers out of jobs. Klinton replied, "Welllllll.....just raise the price of your Pizzas." The CEO replied that it was obvious that Klinton had very poor grasp on the concept of free market economics and that if they raised the price of their goods, the amount of said goods purchased would drop in reation to the price. Any 'artificial' price controls will absolutely backfire in a free market economy. Just raise the price doesn't work....Duh. |

The usual breakdown in a foodservice operation is 15 to 18% of gross goes to HR expense. |

Ah! but they will tell you they 'do' work for 'their' money, aka MY Tax money recycled into their pockets. She pumps a register part time , he's a store clerk. And if as is common they don't turn in to work, and neither of them regard contracted hours as binding, more like a statement of intent, (hangover, can't be bothered to get up, sunny day etc) the .Gov makes up their money with MORE Tax Credits so they don't lose out financially! Now what's the point in a system the rewards lazyness and zero ambition... ANdy |

When they were passing around petitions to be signed to raise the minimum wage here in Florida I pissed off some Barbie Doll looking college chick when I refused to sign the petition. She chased me across the parking lot and wanted to know what I wouldnt sign the petition. "After alll this will only help the poor dont you want to help the poor?" I responded, "Hell no they make to much money as it is." Which sent her into a complete tirade she called me every name in the book and a few I had not heard. I wasted my time trying to explain to her that all raising minimum wage did was raise the price of products we consume everyday which would over ride the effect of the raise in pay said poor person was getting anyway. She did not like that, nor did she like it when I explained to her that people who work minimum wage jobs are working minimum wage jobs because they have no education, no work ethic, and no skill generally performing task that could easily be accomplished by a well trained monkey. I mean really why should someone who picks up garbage and puts in a plastic bag expect to make a living doing that? That will barely support a smoking habit let alone a drug habit.

Not the largest Union in Seattle, our compensation is strictly bargained. Minimum wage in WA is $7.35

Newsflash Nitwits... It's called "MINIMUM" wage, NOT "comfortable wage" or "adequate wage" or "raise-a-family-of-three-on-it wage"!! It's enough for a MINIMUM amount of people (that being ONE person) to live on at a MINIMUM standard of living (no car, no cellphone, no TV, no overpriced convenient-store junkfood, etc.)! That's why they call it MINIMUM wage! But NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Just because so many knucklebrained morons start having kids at 15, or are addle-brained, uneducable mooks and midriffs, or are unmotivated, lazy, pot-smoking skateboard-riding stoners, or are just too reckless and irresponsible to hold any decent job for longer than six months and drift through life with no goal other than to get a case of Keystone and get back on their cheetos-stained couch, we have big Gov't-Nanny to get them a fatter paycheck than they're worth which just encourages their dim-witted, irresponsible, slothful, aimless, unmotivated lazy habits in perpetuity. Damn to hell the minimum wage and all those closet-communists who defend it. |
With inflation and the minimum wage not being raisedin years,it already IS effectively lowered. How is paying people poverty wages good for the economy? |
Unfortunately there are companies that will never pay more than minimum because "we don't have to". They are the same companies that will keep their employees at just enough hours that they don't have to be given any bennies. I hear what you're going to say next: "if they don't like the wages there, they can move". Unfortunately, the employees trapped in those jobs are usually so poor that they don't have the resources to move to where they MIGHT be paid more. |

How do they have time or finances to go to school when they have a family and a minimum wage job? |
An effective minimum wage literally causes unemployment. I feel like the current minimum wage is probably at or below the equilibrium wage for the simplest entry level jobs because very few people seem to make it.

Or is this one of those conjectural situations where somebody just slips through the cracks? |

been there, work for the bastards and left. this is complete horsecrap. At one point i worked a few jobs at the same time and scrimped to save the money to move to a better area. Those that STAY at minimum wage are not people who will EVER exceed in life. They are unmotivated losers that believe themselfs to be victims of society. PROVE you have drive and the will to learn and there is NO way you will remain at min. wage. Sorry but i have lived it first hand. mike |
