Any specific reasons for the two colors? Does one work better at night, or in bright light, or is it just a users preference?

IIRC, the original red blocked out too much red things (like paper targets) and lacked low-light contrast .  Amber is a little easier for the eye to see and doesn't filter out so much red.

They have done yellow as well.
